Oct 5, 2017 - Call me El Capitan!
About 5am, while still sleeping under the stars... it started to sprinkle. I woke up hearing everyone grabbing their stuff and heading below deck. I decided to risk it and fell back to sleep. About 30 minutes later, I woke up, looked at the mountain covered in heavy rain and decided not to risk getting drenched, so I headed below as well. Woke up just before 7, got up, had a small little breakfast, then helped again to put the sails up. We sailed for just under an hour to small little harbor. Anchored up and took the dingy to shore. Walked...Jump to full entry
Oct 4, 2017 - I'm on a boat!
Off to Whitsundays! First we had to drive a few hours from magnetic island. We only stopped for lunch at a small shopping center. Sophie and I had sushi again from Woolworths! Loaded up on some extra sunscreen and headed off to the sailboat! We arrived at the sailboat just after 4pm. The vessel was about 81ft long! The keel was about 20ft so we had to take a little dingy from the harbor to the anchored boat. This boat was enormous! The whole boat was just for us. We got on board, went in the hull to find an empty bunk. Dropped my bags, and...Jump to full entry
Jun 28, 2017 - Sky dive!!
So today I decide to do my first ever sky dive over Whitsunday Islands, Adam decided to support me from the ground. We got to the airport field and I got into a very sexy pair of blue trousers and a harness. The guy I jumped with look so chilled he was the only one not in a uniform, instead he had shorts and a t-shirt on. He told me he had done lots of sky dives and that I was in safe hands. Surprisingly I wasn't too nervous, I was excited, maybe it helps when you don't know what to expect. The plane pulled up and my guy talked me through...Jump to full entry
Jun 27, 2017 - Sailing around Whitsunday's
We arrived in Airlie Beach after a four hour train ride from Townsville. We decided to stay at another Air BnB. Unfortunately this one was not quite as good as our first experience. From the outside the house looked like it came straight out of a horror film, however once inside it was clean and provided us with everything we needed for a good sleep. We boarded the Hammer, an ex racing boat to sail around the Whitsunday Islands. In the past the boat was used to race between Brisbane and Gladstone on the east coast of Australia. We left the...Jump to full entry
Aug 9, 2016 - Festival Time at Airlie Beach
As there were forecasted winds of up to 30 kts, we decided to spend a week in Airlie Beach which also gave us a chance to met up with our good friends Liz & Paul also from Oatley. They are travelling around Australia in their motor home having left Sydney in March. It was lovely to catch up with them again, last time being on the Gold Coast. Liz and Paul will be moving on to Darwin shortly, and it will be some time before we meet again. It was fortunate for us that Airlie Beach’s Reef Festival was on and there was much to amuse us including...Jump to full entry
Nov 27, 2012 - Great Barrier Reef
Well we made it to the Great Barrier Reef off Hamilton Island. Knuckle Reef to be exact. It was a 2.5 hour catamaran ride in rough seas to get to the outer reef. Lots of people with seasickness but not my water babies! They did great. Bella loved snorkeling until she saw 2 really big black fish & then that was it for her. Back on the boat. She did however go back on the water slide they had on the platform many times. It shoots you out into the "deep blue sea" as Bella says. Phillip had a great time also. We snorkeled out so far they sent...Jump to full entry
May 14, 2012 - Whitsundays!
Inden vi hoppede i...Jump to full entry
Feb 2, 2012 - Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands
We arrived into Airlie Beach early afternoon. While Gemma freshened up and had a shower, I freshened up in the pool and rain! We then set about getting supplies and booking our trips for the next two days. Our first day we were up early to catch the bus to the local airport to get a sea plane. We decided that the best way to see the Whitsundays was from the air so we booked a 30 minute scenic flight with a touch and go landing on the sea. All I can say is that it was an amazing experience. The views were a rainbow of blue, greens and whites...Jump to full entry
Jan 3, 2012 - Whitsunday island trip
A total of 12 hour drive from Liana,s home, we begun our journey at 4am. One hour in and keven was already struggling to stay awake, we stopped for coffee and a recharge. WE reached to rockhampton, stayed in a cabin on the camp site. The Fitzroy river ran a few meters from the edge of the campsite, home to the feared salt water crocodiles. There were signs to warn of this, despite this a lady was fishing on the river bank and we posed there for sun set photo,s. Starting a little later the next morning we headed to the Whitsundays, stopping...Jump to full entry
Nov 2, 2011 - Return to Airlie Beach
We headed back for Airlie Beach this morning and had hours to kill before we could check back into our hostels. A bunch of us hung out by the lagoon for a while before going in search of seafood by the beach for lunch. After that we were able to get checked in, and I wandered to the local camera shop to see if they had suggestions on my wet camera. They sold me silica packets and told me to stuff them in the battery compartment to dry it out then give it a few days. Some of the others were catching overnight buses to other places, but those...Jump to full entry
Nov 1, 2011 - Sailing Whitsundays on Wings II - day 2
Today we're visiting Whitehaven Beach, which has some of the most pure sand on earth (99% silica). As this is a national park, nobody is allowed to take anything away, but the only exception has been that NASA was allowed to take some of the sand to polish the lenses for the Hubble Telescope. This is truly the most pristine beach I've ever seen. Just incredible! Really a place worth making a point to visit. We spent some hours hanging out on the beach, taking photos, playing volleyball with people acting as the net. Shane (our boat host)...Jump to full entry
Oct 31, 2011 - Sailing Whitsundays on Wings II - day 1
Today I had to pack up most of my bag to be left in town, and a small bag to take on board the catamaran. So, I stored my bag, went for breakfast, rented a beach towel, and then wandered on down to the meeting point. It was a nice walk to the harbor, and a lovely view. At a little convenience store, I spotted a candy called fruit rock that I'd never seen before. They're little hard candies that remind me of the Millefiori glass work you see in Murano, because they're made to show the fruit they're flavored for when the canes are cut into...Jump to full entry
