May 21, 2012 - Thargomindah to Roma

14th - 15th Thargomindah. The roads heading west are very narrow, only one lane but everyone we meet coming the other way is very courteous, they slow right down and we both get off the edge of the road (very solid edges) to minimise stone damage. We stayed in the Explorers Caravan Park, what a surprise, green lawns, excellent amenities and very friendly owners ( Paul & Ide) they made us very welcome. Thargomindah is a neat little town with a lovely walk on the river. It is also home to a local identity known as Surly Shirley the owner of...

Jazzabout Trip 2012

May 7, 2011 - Roma

30th April. On the road again, we are heading for Roma 265 klms from Rolleston. We stopped for morning tea at Injune, which is another small town, it is a bit bigger and a lot more progressive than Rolleston, it has a few new buildings and businesses. We stopped for about an hour and had a walk around, we continued on to Roma where we booked into the Big Rig Caravan Park for two nights, depending on what we find to do we may stay a bit longer. 1st May. This morning we did the washing then went to check out Roma...there’s not that much to...

Rolleston to Roma This road was marginally better and wouldn’t qualify for a Luna Park ride, but there were a couple of places where the road had been washed away and were in the process of being repaired. This is cattle country and the countryside is looking beautiful and lush, due to the recent rains. Roma itself is a nice little town and is home to Australia's largest cattle saleyards. It too had been badly affected by the recent floods, but to its credit, most of the mess had been cleared away and life is getting back to normal. We...

Living the Dream

Jun 25, 2010 - Roma

We managed to get away at 8.30 am and met up with Sharon’s parents, Lyn and Norm, outside Toowoomba, who will be travelling with us towing their A Van camper. We stopped for lunch at Miles and Claire and Sophie decided to travel with their Grandparents in the other vehicle which gave Alex some much welcomed space to spread out on the back seat of our car. He had fun testing out his 180 degree GoPro camera; some of his pictures are uploaded. It was a great feeling to hit the open road past Miles leaving all the trucks behind and having just...

Roma 19/20 May Home of the "Big Rig". Had a bus tour of town with a local guide. Described how Roma became Australia's original oil/gas town. In 1900 a drilling rig looking for water accidentally struck gas - and oil! Drove around some later - saw the biggest Bottle tree (Baobab?) and visited the Big Rig. This is a display of oil rig equipment, but the light show at night is apparently the best option. We didn't go, but on a drive through, I saw some magnificent restored motor cars and bikes that were there for a concours and...
