Jul 26, 2012 - Winton to Mt Surprise
After chilling most of yesterday, we were ready to move on to Mt Surprise. A beautiful drive, lots of road works and half gravel road slowed the trip down but enjoyed it all. We stopped at Hughenden and had a look around including a dinosaur and local history museum, bought a heater - finally, and a good coffee at a very cool cafe dedicated to old holdens - mainly fj and monaros! The caravan park in Mt Surprise was the best we have stayed at to date on the trip - the town is small but reknown for the its gem mining.....defintely a place to...

Oct 23, 2011 - Mt Surprise - Oct 21-24
After a very wet few days in the Atherton region, and yet another mountain trek, we flat-landers are finally back on familiar terrain, in the warmth and with clear skies!! We are staying at Mt Surprise, about 50kms west of the Undara Volcanic National Park. First night here, was Pizza Night - a little expensive, but yummy - after all, we are in the middle of "Nowhere"!! Only 4 vans here and a camper, so is very quiet, but a great camp. Back to Undara for the 1030 tour of the Lava tubes - amazing formations and colours - quite an amazing...

Nov 3, 2010 - Mount Surprise
Mount Surprise – 12 October to 17 October (5 nights) Only 4 days to go until we meet our first grandchild, Oscar, for the very first time. For those that don’t know it, Jason, Megan and Oscar will be flying from London to Perth and we will fly from Cairns on Sunday to be with them for a week. Can’t wait. The 239km drive from Croydon to Mt Surprise was terrible with single lane and bumpy, pot-holed bitumen for about ¾ of the distance. I thought Queensland, like WA, was supposed to be booming. Well if they are, they’re not spending their boom...

Sep 4, 2010 - Mount Surprise and Undarra Lava Tubes
Our next stop is to be Mt. Surprise, so that we could tour the nearby Undara Lava Tubes. The Gregory Developmental Road from Charters Towers north west to the Lynd Junction proved to be quite a nightmare, with a single lane ribbon road for much of the way, road works all along this stretch of 252 km, and dirt and gravel, when we had to move off the narrow road for the road trains which were also passing through. We managed to pull off the road for a short break and a group of emus came to have a look at us! We had another 90 km of rough...

Aug 21, 2009 - Day 31 – Atherton to Undara – Car eating cows
Last night we decided to head into town for a pub feed at the Barron Valley Hotel. In a completely empty dining room we got directed to table nine. ‘The wedding singer’ movie??? Anyone??? The freaks were on table nine. We must have been the freaks because while we “out of towners” were sitting there in shorts, t-shirts and thongs (the foot type), one of the staff proceeded to light the fire in the open fireplace. We ordered that classic Australian meal Reef & Beef (aka Surf & turf, aka…..). Who decided that the perfect accompaniment to a...

Oct 6, 2004 - Undara Lava Tubes
Cairns to Undara 288km (5,505km total driven so far) Arrived in Undara around 2.30pm and experience our first dry heat of inland Oz. Phew! Really debilitating and...full of flies. We stayed in one of their restored railway cabins which was comfortable, peaceful and lovely. The evening was spent having a couple of drinks in their outdoor restaurant and then sitting around the campfire as a Savannah Guide took us through stories, facts and slides of the local area and its animal inhabitants. Really great. The Savannah Guides are an...
