Oct 24, 2011 - Day 22 - 23 UPDATE NOTES

Hi All, Just tripping on around as we do. Had an interesting few days at Emerald and on one day went out to what is called “the Gemfields”, 3 small towns where they mine and fossick for sapphires. Lunch at the country pub made for a good day out. From there we went to Carnarvon Gorge for 2 nights, famous for lots of bush walks that go for miles and a haven for bushwalkers, so we dutifully went for a walk but basically the big ones were really too big for us. Being in a national park it made for stacks of wild life mainly of the winged and...

Mar 7, 2007 - The day before we leave...

Well, here we are then. Tomorrow we head off to the other side of the world... about time! The last few weeks have been a little "crazy" with organising, packing up and saying our goodbyes. Fortunately we have had Son and Doiv (Fi's sister and Bro-in law - seasoned travellers) to call when packing and feel that we have everything important that we need. Fingers crossed. Thanks to those who celebrated with us at our going away party ... especially Lyndl for so nicely putting up with Fi's welcoming haze, I mean hug. It had a hint of...

Jan 29, 2006 - Hi Ho Silver!

Travel quote of the week! "I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read on the train." Oscar Wilde As we drove into the historic Sunshine Coast town of Tewantin, the first thing we noticed was the whitewashed statue of an Anzac soldier. Not that difficult really as his plinth was in the middle of the main street. Opposite, at the entrance to the memorial park, the phrase, 'Lest we forget', had been carved and painted onto a wooden beam. How can we forget I wondered when the world has never stopped...

Apr 4, 2005 - Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo (Crikey!)

Hey ho! G'day mate! "Ohhhh crikey... you're alright mate" "He's reaaaally cranky!" etc. Australia Zoo - the home of Steve Irwin! The zoo specialises in Crocs and other nasty animals, but also had some camels, elephants and tigers, all being kept in captivity. Steve, of course, wasn't there, although you could get your picture taken with a cardboard cutout. The shop was overflowing with Steve Irwin memorabelia (fridge magnets, pens etc) - So we played "find the most random piece of Steve Irwin gear" - a great game! Highlights were the...

Feb 10, 2005 - Rain one day, shine the next

Greetings everybody! I just thought I would let you know what I've been up to these past two days. Yesterday it was rainy and gloomy all day, but we didn't let the weather damper our spirits. As soon as we woke up we took a few laps in our pool and then the five of us went to go buy bikes. The newest addition to our little clan is Amber. Amber is from Fargo and is a student from Concordia. After getting our bikes we decided to take the bus to the plaza (mall). All I can say is this mall is huge! It's built over a river and the weirdest...

Feb 9, 2004 - Springbrook Farm, Goomeri

On Monday, 9th Feb, we all set off on the bus to Gympie to catch a minibus arranged to pick us up to take us to Goomeri, the home of Springbrook Farm, Visit Oz. The cost of the buses were already settled as part of the fee paid to VO. We arrived at the farm in time for lunch and were greeted heartily by Joanna and Dan, the founders of VO. It didn't take us long, however, to learn more about Joanna and Dan and their peculiararities. He has obviously been conditioned by years spent in the forces at a high level, and she expects nothing less...
