Nov 21, 2017 - Fraser Island

Tuesday was our pre-booked trip to Fraser Island. The 4x4 wagon picked us up from the campsite at 0615 and dropped us off again at 1730 so it was a long day. Although it was good to see Fraser Island including the 'perched' lake, some local Dingos and the rain forest, it was pretty much a day inside a vehicle getting thrown about. At the end of the day we did drive for about 40 kms along a pristine beach which was a strange experience and very smooth. Not a bad day but I'm not sure I would recommend it.

Oct 9, 2017 - Recovery

The doctors kept me in the hospital for about 10hrs to keep an eye on me. After that time, they gave me a choice... stay in the hospital and have to charge me a couple thousand $$ or get a hotel room across the street and return immediately if any symptoms return or if I don't get any better of the next day. Since they said they were only going to be observing me, I chose the hotel option and they released me with meds. I found the hotel room where Blake was staying. He had been traveling with me during my ambulance rides off the island....

Oct 8, 2017 - Down with the sickness

Everything was off to a great morning. The drive to Fraser Island wasn't too bad, only a few hours. We had to take an hour long ferry to the island though so we parked the bus and waited... About 330pm, we get on the boat and find our seats, we all talked amougst ourselves. A few minutes into the ride, I was feeling a bit odd, almost queezy. Figured it might be seasickness, but didnt know because I had never had that before. We finally get to the island and depart the boat. Now I'm feeling a bit warm and I'm getting an uneasy feeling. We...

Jun 30, 2017 - Hervey Bay and Fraser Island

Our next stop, Hervey Bay was a long 11 hour overnight train journey from Airlie Beach. Things didn't start well when we got to the station to find that the lady who booked our tickets had put July instead of June so we were essentially one month early for our train! Fortunately, as with most people in Oz, the guard at the train station was really helpful and managed to find us a couple of spare seats on the train which was lucky considering it is school holidays at the moment Needless to say the night didn't well quickly as we had a...

Apr 20, 2013 - Fraser Island

April 20 - 22 We had an awesome 3 days on a "Tag along 4WD self drive tour" of Fraser Island with 30 backpackers mainly Swiss and German. Davo and I both had a go at driving on the beach. Every day was a race against the high tide, with some challenging conditions. 2 of the vehicles in our group broke down within 15 minutes of each other at the end of the second day and we had to hitch a ride back to our camp. We saw all the sights, Lake Wabby, Eli Creek, the Maheno Wreck, Indian Head, Champaigne Pools, Lake McKenzie, Central Station, and...

Mar 7, 2013 - Fraser Island

Fraser island was a 3 day trip driving a 4x4 in groups of 8 around the island stopping off along the way to different sites. Our first stop was LAke Mckenzie, home to a lonely turtle who was in need of a girlfriend, made out of pure rainwater it was one of the biggest rainwater lakes around. With its own beach and surrounded by rainforest, it was beautiful to say the least. After we found and set up camp on an Aboriginal site with tents and huts everywhere ! That night we cooked a group meal and had a party on the beach. Avoiding the...

Oct 24, 2012 - Fraser Island

Fraser Island: 24 - 26 October 2012 Bogged, Bogged and Triple Bogged! We were warned that the hardest part of the trip would be getting across the soft sand on the mainland to catch the car ferry across to Fraser Island and they weren't wrong. Within 50 metres of leaving the tar road we were well and truly bogged with the camper trailer acting like an anchor. The 1st people to come to our rescue tried to snatch us out but unfortunately we didn't get very far. With lots of shovelling (by Sean) and 2 more 4WD's hooked up for a double snatch...

Sep 27, 2012 - Fraser Island and Whitsundays

In Mid-September we had the opportunity to experience the largest sand island in the world, the Fraser Island. Measuring over 120 km long and averaging 15 km wide, this island was magnificient. After a short, rain-filled ferry over to this island, we experienced 4x4 on a tour bus. Times were questionable on narrow single-lane paths with traffic going both ways. We saw Mackenzie beach, a warm, fresh water lake with Silica sands which we exfoliated our skin with. Eli creek was as beautiful as it was rich with vast aboriginal history. The...

Sep 21, 2012 - Day 3 Fraser island

After a look around the resort we head up the crazy 4wd track again. Today's mission is to take the quickest route through to the beach in order to get up the coast line. With joshiemoo asleep again I walk to lake walby lookout of my own, all the while watching for snakes and dingoes. The view is exceptional a sand blow leading into a lake a great place to come back to in the future. As we drive we spot so many gecko's and Marc even has to stop for one as it crosses the road and climbs up the tree to our left, very cool. It's not long...

Sep 20, 2012 - Day 2 Fraser island

Today it reached 31C by 12:00. We decide to drive the Northern track. The terrain is again very different to yesterday. We see our first sand blow - knifeblade sandblow. Just stunning reminds me of sandfly bay in nz only more like a caynon. A walk down to lake allom not much of a view due to flooding but an awesome chance for dee and I to sit and watch a gecko climb a tree very cool! Shame the boys are asleep in the car. We decide to drive to Bellerets old hut for lunch. Sure is old can't even find much to take a photo of. We decide to head...

Sep 19, 2012 - Fraser Island

Caught the early ferry across to Fraser island this morning arriving in Kingfisher resort. Will be neat today to catchup with our good friends jas,dee and their wee man Nate who we haven't seen as since he was a baby. It's finally neat that Marc gets to be a boy in the sandpit today. After spending 10mins trying to find the only road out of the place we hit a 4wd track that makes Mum's off-track roads look like a freeway!!!! Oh well at least my man's smile just got twice as big. Once we were over the rollercoaster ride it's native bush...
