Jun 5, 2013 - Out and About in Charters Towers
4TH – June, 2013 Last night we had a lovely dinner in the camp kitchen, crumbed chicken schnitzel for me and fish for Rob. Plenty of salad and very nice. Start the day well with a lovely Devonshire tea. Good sized scones and heaps of jam and cream and the best part is there were no calories in any of it. (Yeah I wish LOL) We decided to go for a drive just to have a look around and pulled up at Centenary Park. They have a monument type thing there to the old timers panning for gold. As with most of the parks in Charters Towers it is well...

Jun 5, 2013 - Around Charters Towers
6th June Charters Towers has a colourful history. An aboriginal horse boy named Jupiter first discovered gold at the foot of Towers Hill in 1871. The lookout has many interesting and factual story boards to read, whilst taking in the panoramic views of Charters Towers. Between the years of 1872 and 1924 approximately 30 vertical, underlying shafts and tunnels were dug by the large number of miners who worked their claims. The Pyrites Works on the eastern side of Towers Hill is the largest surviving remains of pyrites chlorination works in...

4th June We are enjoying our stay here and have decided to extend to Saturday. The park is set in beautiful grounds adjacent to a golf course. Unfortunately Greg's shoulder won't allow him to play. The weather continues to be warm during the day, a bit cooler at night. Not quite hot enough for me to get in the pool, hoping it gets a bit warmer in the next few days and the wind drops. A friendly park with lots of activities planned. Every night is happy hour around the campfire. Monday night we enjoyed a meal of chicken schnitzel with...

1st June, 2013 We left Sapphire this morning in nice sunshine and are heading for Charters Towers via Rubyvale, and Belyando Crossing. Sapphire and Rubyvale are very similar to other mining towns, gem shops every few hundred yards, old mining equipment left to rust in the paddocks and shanty type houses. There are a few nice houses here and there but it isn’t somewhere I would like to live. Good to go and see how things are done there though, it’s quite interesting. Passing through Clermont I thought to myself, this is very much like a...

Jun 1, 2013 - Belyando Crossing - Charters Towers
1st June Heading out this morning we are travelling on the Clermont/ Rubyvale road. The road is narrow in places but otherwise in good condition. Enjoying the scenery which is changing all the time. Lots of cattle grazing along side the road but they seem to be road smart and will move away from oncoming traffic. Was a bit harder to avoid their droppings that they left behind on the road. We are noticing that the wattle and callistemon are starting to flower, the colours are beautiful. It is early afternoon when we stop at Belyando...

On the home stretch now - on familiar roads as we headed from Capella to Clermont to Charters Towers. The road from Clermont to Belyando Crossing was a bit ordinary but it was nice to stop at the crossing to have lunch before arriving in the Towers around 2pm. Spent the afternoon and evening catching up with Mum and Dad while the boys enjoyed riding around on the bikes.

Jul 24, 2012 - Arrived in Charters Towers
Well we are off!! Our departure time was 3 and half off. We were supposed to leave at 10 but didn't get away until 1.30. It was really sad leaving George. We gave him one last walk. Lots of hugs and the kids even kissed him. I draw the line at kissing George, have you seen is drool? yuk!! I had to drive the car and follow Kerry and Brenton in the motorhome, what a long time to Charters Towers. My reward was an ice-cream at Macdonalds, well Meagan really wanted one, I just got dragged along. When we got to Charters Towers, Granddad made us a...

Sep 3, 2010 - Charters Towers
From Richmond it was another 355 km to Charters Towers and the road passed through seemingly endless flat, dry country. We stopped at the little town of Hughenden for a break and then it was on again towards Charters Towers. We crossed over the dividing range about 70 km out of town where the road climbed and we drove through the beautiful White Mountains National Park. There are spectacular views from the lookout here. Coming into Charters Towers the landscape changed and we saw more forest and green grass! Charters Towers experienced a...

Sep 24, 2009 - Back in Charters Towers
Went for our walk yesterday and then Sheena did it again early this morning (gotta get rid of all that chocolate I ate last night!!). Also went down to the campfire last night for a bit of a singsong. Whilst my hat goes off to the guides who run these it wasn’t very exciting! I tell you if I had half the talent of the MacKintosh boys I could make a fortune traveling around the caravan parks and offering my services for these camp fire do’s! Left Undara at about 9.00 am heading for Charters Towers driving along The Lynd. Oh my God – not the...

Jun 5, 2009 - Charters Towers township
Had originally only booked in for one night at Charters Towers but after looking at the brochures we decided to extend it for another night and have a look around town. And guess what – I think we will be here for a few more days yet – it is such a lovely little place. We headed into the town center and Ken dropped me off with the intention of going off and having a game of golf. I had a short walk up one street then decided to head into the information center for a town map. When I walked in a man approached me and asked if I was...
