Apr 1, 2012 - Being spoiled rotten in Caloundra

We headed from Brisbane up the sunshine coast towards Caloundra where we planned to spend a couple of days with teh friends we met in NZ, namely Cheryl and Deborah. We planned to get there about 5 but in the end we managed to get there just after 12 and so we had a good walk around Caloundra which is a really nice town on the beach. It was a bit windy but we still managed to get a cup of tea made in the back of the van and to finish off our provisions, great planning that. There is a fantastic boardwalk there and so we walked right along in...

Apr 25, 2011 - Mooloolooba

Today we left for ooly as Tia calls it. We meet at airport and thanks to Carmine we have a speedy check in despite Nonnas bag of grog and Zio's sausage salsccicia. Terrorist tia had her scissors confiscated. Which was lucky for us cos she was gonna fly the plane.  So we begin our descent into qld after a gruelling and sleepless journey. Ready for the next phase of our journey - pick up the minda bus for twelve and head off to lunch at hot pippis - if they'll let us in! The bus journey was uneventful . We played many games of I spy, and...

Oct 16, 2010 - Golden Beach & Caloundra

We set off in the car heading to the sunshine coast the drive probably took around 1 and a half hours, just getting out of the Brisbane city suburbs was the hard part. Arrived at the golden beach was a pretty and scenic area but slightly cold winds made a little tough to enjoy it for too long. Then drove on to Caloundra which again had amazing scenery and looked round the place in the car but a bit to cold to enjoy the sunny day, hope there is more to come. Arrived back to the campsite just as it was getting dark, which meant you could see...

Sep 18, 2010 - A week of holidays at Dicky Beach

Sept 18th Upon hearing of Dicky Beach from some friends this was our next destination. It happened to co-incide with school holidays and minimum of 1 week booking. Good excuse to stop. We've had lots of quick moves for a while. 10mins drive north of Caloundra. One of the best campgrounds we've come across for a beach holiday. Ticks all the boxes. Good climate, easy walking access to beach and shops, short drive to main town, excellent, clean facilities and sites. Hayden was off playing with 'friends' as soon as we opened the car door. Sept...

Jul 28, 2010 - Rain, rain go away......

Hello I typed a long catchup a couple of nights ago (26th) and just as I finished the internet connection dropped out - grrrrr! So here I am again and must remember to use the save button! On Friday we went to Coolangatta for a wander around and had lunch there. I left my bag of shopping at the cafe where we had lunch - after we had gone back and thankfully it had been handed in - Barry said that he is so pleased I am getting forgetful like him LOL! On Saturday morning we packed up and headed for Nerang. We went to stay with friends who had...

Jul 25, 2010 - Caloundra

Caloundra, uncut gem of the Sunshine Coast. I’m not actually a Sunshine Coast person, just too much mayhem and too many Geriatrics driving using the bump and go technique. Staying at the Golden Beach Holiday Park, which is quite good, nice and clean, and within 100 metres of shops, restaurants newsagencies etc, even have a “pensioners” hairdresser where a haircut will cost $11 and beard trim is $4 plus you get to chat to Lucy the Asian barber. We went for a drive after lunch to the Ginger factory at Yandina and stopped in at the BIG...

Jul 31, 2009 - Day 11 – Australia Zoo.

Ev woke up as excited as he had been in a long time as today was Australia Zoo day. He has a CD where the Wiggles go to Australia Zoo. In spite of being assured the Wiggles would not be there today he was excited to see the animals. I must admit I had my reservations about the place. Once suffering the admission price ($54 for adults and $32 for kids over 3 – At least Aaron was free) and getting inside, Evan had a blast. There was the usual, pat a koala, kangaroo etc options and lots of native wildlife. He loved the elephants and I must...

Jul 30, 2009 - Day 10 – Gold Coast to Sunshine Coast (Caloundra)

Overall a pretty relaxed day. We only had about 90 minutes of driving today and it was all on freeways so very relaxing. Starting out from the Gold Coats, Biggera waters, we headed up the M1 and drove straight past Brisbane. We made a stop into Caboolture to had a quick look at the warbird museum there. Not a lot to see so back on the road. We have discovered this part of the world is full of Grey Nomads at this time of year, specifically Victorians. Fortunately we called ahead but none of the caravan parks in Caloundra had a vacancy for...

Dec 22, 2006 - Australia Zoo! Steve Irwin RIP

Off to Australia Zoo today which was made famous by the late Cocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. We got picked up and had around 6 hours there which was plenty of time and were given some facts and figures about the zoo by the driver on the way, who actually worked there for 2 years. We watched a DVD on the way too about Steve's life as to many tourist, he was just face to a TV programme but in fact did a whole lot more for the conservation of the World's Wildlife. First we went to the "Crocosuem" (open air theatre) to have a Snake and Bird...

Nov 27, 2006 - Brisbane

And so it's over. A spirited fight on Day 4 and at least we got to a fifth day with a little bit of hope until the 3rd ball of the day. Lowlights: * Harmison on the first day. * Our batsmen throwing their wickets away. * The Barmy Army not being allowed to congregate and make a noise. * The trumpeter being ejected and his trumpet taken away. * The Aussies - who only have one song, no sense of irony and can't take their weak beer. Highlights: * Being there! * The sunshine - just the 30 degrees. * Fighting back on Day 4 - Collingwood &...

Nov 4, 2006 - Sunshine Coast

We decided to treat ourselves with a whole week at the Sunshine Coast. We had a wonderful week and it was so good to stay in the one place. We camped at a small park right on the beautiful Mooloolaba beach. At first we were taken aback by the business and noise but we got used to it a bit by the end of the week. The weather all along the Queensland coast seems to be very variable and unpredictable. We planned to spend a lot of time on the beach but it was generally too windy and not warm enough. However we did manage a few swims. The second...
