Jul 1, 2012 - Airlie Beach to Bowen
Travelled from Seaforth to Airlie Beach, under 2hrs so anther easy days travel. Poor Max wants to go 'back to mummy's house' again. In sugar cane country now and some farms were harvesting so we were able to see some machinery which kept him happy in the car for a little while! Weather was rather crappy as we drove in to Airlie, dark grey skies, couldn't help thinking it would be much prettier if we had bright blue skies. We lashed out and chose to stay at the Big 4 adventure whitsundays resort, complete with pool and waterslides, 18 hole...

Jun 19, 2011 - Aus - Day 47 - Alligator Creek
We made our way past Bowen into the Bowling Green Bay National Park. Diverse habitats are protected here in the region’s largest coastal park. There are rugged granite mountains rising abruptly in the distance. We are going to camp overnight at the Alligator Creek campground. There are agile wallabies, allied rock-wallabies and rufous bettongs that feed here during the cool of the day. There are large gum trees among the park and deep pools in the creek that you can swim in. Just as we were entering the park Jason spotted a tree with 3...

Bowen – 4 January to 8 January (4 nights) The 203km drive from Townsville to Bowen was very picturesque with mountain ranges most of the way and endless fields of sugar cane. After passing through a nice little town called Ayr, you come to the Burdekin River, which is notorious for flooding during the wet season and this year, with all the rain, it was really impressive. The bridge itself is something to behold and unfortunately we came upon it by surprise, so didn’t get a chance to stop and take pics. Once you’re on the very narrow bridge...

Further down the coast, our next stop was Bowen. There are several picturesque beaches in Bowen many of which can be reached by pleasant walks along the foreshore. We spent a pleasant morning at Horseshoe Bay, an attractive little beach north of the town. There was some coral in the water just off the shoreline and it was quite interesting to snorkel around the rocks. We were assured by some local people that it was quite safe to swim here – the stinger season not beginning till the end of the month! Bowen is also the second largest...

Aug 21, 2010 - Bowen......more swimming!
August 17th Another 100km south to Townsville to pick up a spare part and to vote. In and out within the hour and a further 200km to Bowen. Another spot we'd been recommended to go for its' pretty beaches. Stayed at Horseshoe Bay, for 3 nights. Beautiful bay with clear blue water, massive boulders either end and a coral reef for snorkelling 20mts off shore. Caravan park in great location but not green and squashed! August 18th I found a great track early morning over and around the boulders which dominate the coastline, took me around the...

Arrived at Bowen this afternoon. Only staying for one night. We went to the Flagstaff Hill lookout which is quite specacular with views to Gloucester Island and it is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. There are breathtaking views of Edgecumbe Bay and the North Head lighhouse and Stone Island. You can walk across to the lighthouse when it is low tide but you have to make sure you start your journey back before the tide turns otherwise you will be stuck on the island. If we were staying longer I would definately walk across to the...

Bowen, Hmmmmmm so the stopover at Ayr fell through due to an administrative error when booking the park, turns out the park was 50km north of Ayr…. We are now in Bowen, moving on to Bucasia (Mackay) in the morning. Just had an Email from Special Agent Lindwall (Retired, but related to the famous cricketer) concerning travel on the Red Rattler, I’ve sought permission for Gracie to travel so that will be another story for her to tell her friends when she gets to talk to them at “Dog Park”…. Interesting to see the vegetation change as we move...

Aug 10, 2009 - Day 21 – Mackay to Bowen – More oversized fiberglass fruit
We saw something unusual today. Rain. It lasted for about 20-30 seconds and barely wet the windscreen but it was rain. The first we have seen since Tamworth (day 2 & 3 if you are counting). We have actually had some cloud cover the last couple of mornings but it has managed to keep the heat down early while we are driving which has been good. For those of you who have spent time with Evan recently you will know he is going through a “how are things made” phase. Obviously after driving through 1000kms of cane country the question has come...

Jun 29, 2007 - Townsville to Eungella Queensland 9 June to 11June 2007.
Sylvia's Comments. We had two decision's to make this morning did we return to Townsville and climb up Castle Hill and did we stay another night and go and watch Australia 1 play rugby against Japan. After some discussion we decided to do neither and set off down the Bruce Highway looking for pastures new. We thought we were back in Scotland today when we drove through Ayr then we went down to Alva Beach for lunch. On the drive today I realised that we were passing along through some very flat country, this was strange as we have been in...
