The travel bureau in Alice Springs was very helpful with the rental car and even obtained unlimited mileage for our two-day rental. Decided to do the the East McDonnels area that first day as we'd used the early morning renting the car, and it's a shorter drive east than west. It is more enjoyable to set one's own pace and destination, though it does cost a bit more. The McDonnells east of Alice are not as majestic (as the western) but there is tranquility with fewer people. I don't think we saw 6 other hikers during the whole day - vs....

Sep 14, 2013 - Trephina Gorge

We drove east of Alice Springs to Trephina Gorge which we climbed. It was a good climb and we came back via the river bed. We left there and went on to The Ross River Resort. It is way out at the end of the made road and across a river. They got cut off last year. We stopped there for an Icecream and then drove back at dusk to Alice Springs. We went to the dump point and decided to stop on the road next to the show grounds and sleep the night. Aug 6, 2009 - Trephina Gorge

Trephina Gorge Nature Park is 85 km east of Alice Springs in the East MacDonnell Ranges. Once again a large gorge cut through the quartzite cliffs by huge amounts of water in wet periods. The creek was dry here but the width of the creek bed and the many river red gums growing here shows how much water comes through here at times. Tonight we pack for the trip north to Katherine some 1200 kms on a sealed road. So we expect to be out of contact for at least three days as we press on.
