Aug 3, 2018 - Nitmiluk National Park

We spent a night in Katherine so we could visit Nitmiuk National Park previously called Katherine Gorge National Park. Katherine Gorge, a deep gorge carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River, is the central attraction of the park and is made up of thirteen gorges, with rapids and falls, and follow the Katherine River, which begins in Kakadu. We joined an afternoon cruise through the first two gorges and learnt that the gorges and the surrounding landscape have great ceremonial significance to the local Jawoyn people, who are...

Aug 4, 2013 - Katherine Gorge

(Ben) Today we made the drive back into Katherine and then out to the gorge for the 2 gorges cruise we'd booked yesterday. Katherine Gorge is actually a series of 13 gorges carved out of the ancient sandstone by the determined Katherine River. The tour boats can get into the first three of them and if you hire a canoe you can get up to about number 7 or 8. We took the two gorge cruise rather than three option (neither is particularly cheap!). It was another spectacular day (well, two hours actually) of taking in scenery that we've seen so...

Sep 2, 2012 - Nitmilku: Katherine Gorge

Nitmilku: Katherine Gorge 2 - 3 Sept 2012 After 3 weeks in the Kimberley we headed back across the boarder into NT and made our way to Nitmilku (Nit-me-look) or more commonly known as Katherine Gorge. Nitmilku National Park is owned by the Jawoyn Aboriginal people and is jointly managed with the Parks and Wildlife Service of the Northern Territory. We stayed at the national parks campsite expecting fairly basic facilities but to our surprise it had a fantastic resort style pool & restaurant in the centre of the complex where we could relax...

Nitmiluk National Park – 20 September to 23 September (3 nights) The 302km drive was pleasant enough and we decided not to stay in the caravan park in Katherine, but to stay closer to the action in the Nitmiluk National Park itself, which is 29km from Katherine and is situated on the banks of the Katherine River. The Nitmuluk National Park features some of the most spectacular gorge scenery in the Northern Territory with breathtaking views of the whole area to be seen from the various walks in the area. Nitmiluk Gorge is a maze of waterways...

Living the Dream

Hmm, 1100...

Apr 29, 2010 - Lilly ponds & Smitt Rock

Apr 27, 2010 - Burawei Lookout Loop

Jul 25, 2009 - Saturday 25th July (2)

July 25th A bit cooler last night, good for sleeping but there seemed to be a lot of people in the pub in front of the caravan park and closing time created quite a disturbance which seemed to go on forever. In reality it was probably midnight…anyway, we got sufficient sleep and with the new time zone found we were getting up at 7.30 instead of 6am. My editor has reminded me that I still haven’t given all the info about the Ord and Lake Argyle. In their infinite wisdom the engineers decided to install 4 hydro-electric turbines underground...

Jul 22, 2007 - Stay to the Left

Nitmiluk National Park Today I left Darwin driving a 4WD Toyota Landcruiser, manual transmission and steering wheel on the right side. I have to admit I was a bit nervous heading out, especially since I needed to stop at the grocery store first. Parking was a bit of a challenge-fortunately I parked next to someone who took longer in the shop than I did, so they never knew that I had blocked in the driver's side of their car. My new mantra...Stay to the left...Stay to the left...it's even on a sticker on the speedometer (also in German, the...
