Jun 9, 2017 - Mataranka take 2

Well we are still here enjoying the warm afternoon, the mornings are very cool at present, cold winds from the south blowing up and it gets really cold overnight down to 6-9 degrees. The sun comes through the trees around 7-45 so we look for that pretty soon. We fill the day in walking around the park, checking out the vans, people and birds and anything else to watch. Some pretty faced wallabies are here but we have only caught them once out during the day. There are special birds up here and its very exciting to see them We will be here...

Jun 4, 2017 - Arrival at Mataranka into the heat at lastuntitled

We have finally arrived into the heat, already today at 10am local time its about 25degrees in our cool car, not out in the sun. We spent a couple of hours in the stream yesterday after we set up and will be here for 7 nights, first real big stop we have had. Boy was it cold in Alice Springs again. No more water bottles for a while, all the winter woollies are packed away. We are almost on the same site as 2013. We had a great time at Trephina Gorge and Daly Waters Pub night was good food and the local entertainment was good but not great...

Jul 20, 2016 - Mataranka

Up the Centre 19.7.16 Mataranka What beautiful weather we are having, deep blue skies and so warm, but not too hot yet. Started the day with a swim, not so many people, and the water is so much warmer early. Then we sat up near the office so we can get the free wifi to send Noel's Facebook and my Journal. It is really lovely here being able to sit outside and have wallaby's peacocks and birds come up to us. A lady a few vans up has decorated bags hanging outside, she sells them to raise money for wigs for cancer sufferers. Think our craft...

Jul 18, 2016 - Daly Waters to Mataranka

Up the Centre 18.7.16 Daly Waters to Mataranka 164km The weather has certainly changed, beautiful blue sky, no wind today, think we have come into summer weather. Cool at night but not cold. A short drive today, at Mataranka Homestead by 10.30am. It is a real oasis here, more trees and around the springs hugh palm trees. A very pretty spot. There are a lot of people here, caravans and camper trailers. Went for our first swim in the warm springs. The sides of the springs have been cemented but the bottom of the pool is natural sand. It...

Jun 15, 2016 - Wednesday 15th Thursday 16th June Mataranka

Mataranka Filling up with fuel in the morning we left Katherine to drive to Mataranka, our first stop was Bitter Springs thermal pool, it was lunch time so we had lunch first then on went the bathers and off we walked along a path to the water. There was a ladder going down into the creek to make it easier, however us being us we jumped in and caused waves, lol, nearly washing people off their noodles they were balancing on, Oh well, we gave them a thrill ride, we floated down stream in the warm clear blue water to the end which was only...

2016 holiday

May 27, 2016 - Mataranka

R&R day today! Ian was keen to check his net and also to practice fishing with hopefully no-one around. We took the dogs for a short walk first, then I had some quiet time while Ian tried his hand (no luck with either the rod or the net unfortunately! ) We had our first noodle down the creek after lunch. It really is a sublime experience! You float down this malaleuca, cabbage palm, reed lined sulphur blue creek with the sounds of the bush around you and just listen to the birds and watch the passing scenery. Other people are obviously...

May 26, 2016 - Mataranka

After doing some washing, we went for our first swim (float really!) down at the springs. The current is actually quite fast so it doesn't take too long to go 200 metres or so before you get out of the water and do it all again! At about lunchtime, we headed over to Mataranka Homestead to see the springs there. These are the springs I had visited on Central Australian tour in 1974 as well as once when I had come down with some of the crew from prawn trawler I was working on at the time. I'm not sure it was as beautiful as I remembered. They...

May 25, 2016 - Daly Waters to Mataranka

Left Daly Waters just before 10am and made our way to Mataranka-about 150 ks We weren't really sure where we would stay whilst in Mataranka because all the springs are in national parks. We knew we couldn't stay at the Mataranka homestead (used in filming of 'We of the Never Never') and we had been told that the springs at Bitter Springs were better than at the homestead. Anyway, long story short, lady at the fuel station told us that caravan park at Bitter Springs was not in the national park and that they took dogs. Well, it turns out the...

May 1, 2016 - Daly Waters to Mataranka Homestead - May 1 to May 3

Sunday May 1 to Tuesday May 3 Daly Waters Pub to Mataranka Homestead Pinch and a punch! Woke early – bloody cowboys revving the engines of their kickass off road vehicles! – so had breakfast and were on the road just after 8.00am. Stopped at Larrimah which was a Repeater Station during the days of the Overland Telegraph. Just north is the classic Fran’s Place for coffee, scones, pies, cold drinks etc. Last time we came through this way she was closed – not only was she open, but she was also busy. What a one off she is – rough as, charges...

Tardis Travels 2016

Sep 28, 2014 - Katherine Gorge

We had a 5.30am start for the Katherine Gorge, (Nitmiluk is the name given to it by the local Aboriginals). We walked down to the boat ramp and had a cup of tea and some fruit before getting on the boat, Cruising along the Katherine Gorge. It is very beautiful and it gives you a good feeling to enjoy God's creation. We arrived at the end of the gorge and had time to see some aboriginal rock art by the local aboriginal people done in ancient times. Then into another boat for a short cruise in the next gorge. As the water level is very low...

Aug 17, 2014 - Mataranka

Another late departure from the Tennant Creek caravan park and off we went up the highway backtracking to the 'Three Ways' northward bound passing a few good spots to camp but it was far to early to pull over. We ended up pulling into Newcastle Waters even though we said we wouldn't as it gets very crowded and really is more like a lookout than a stop over area, however it was not crowded when we pulled in and parked in a reasonable spot so decided to stay. It's very close to the highway, midway up a hill and the road trains (and other...

Jun 26, 2014 - Mataranka

It is good to have power and signal again. Made it to Mataranka Homestead after lunch yesterday. Set up and off to the "Thermal Pool" to relax. Couple of G&T's and up to the reception/entertainment area to listen to the music. 6-9pm The Three Amigos. 3 retired musicians who have hooked up and just go on entertaining. Left there to come back and have tea with every intention of going back. But while we were eating, we could here the music quite clearly from where we were. On the way here, we stopped in Mt Isa for the women to go...
