May 14, 2012 - Jervois to Alice Springs

14th May 2012 Day 7: We awoke from a very cold night and decided to get out of the dirt and corrugations ASAP. We left at 7.30 NT time. The first 30kms took more than 1 hour to traverse and then to our surprise the roads improved as they were graded to the Stuart Highway. What a lucky break as by this time we were truly over the Plenty track (oops we mean Highway), so was the Kedron and the Toyota. I hope they forgive us. 13th June. Today we left Alice Springs with Cyn & Ron heading for Gem Tree, which is a cattle station in the middle of nowhere we had thought we would do some fossicking, but on arrival decided against it, Wayne and I booked into a cabin which was quite O.K. If you aren’t there to search for gems there’s not much point being there

Aug 1, 2006 - Fossisking at Gem Tree & Harts Range

About 300km south of Devils Marbles we reach the intersection of the Stuart and Plenty Highways. We head west down the Plenty Highway about 70km to Gem Tree, a campsite on Alcoota station specifically opened up around 15 years ago to cater for gem fossicking in the Harts Ranges (about 100k northwest of Alice). The main types of gems to be found are Garnets and Zircon. Soli is beside himself with excitement and is convinced he is going to find a gem big enough to buy another Prado. Fingers crossed!
