Tom: Our first full day in Sydney was by motorcoach (with guide), and provided a comprehensive introduction to the downtown area and the nearby coastal area including what seems to be the locals’ favored playground, Bondi Beach. ... Roughly the same number live right here in Sydney alone. ... Sydney’s origins are somewhat less than glamorous. ... It seems that England saw the continent of Australia as best suited for a penal colony, and dispatched some 700 convicts (mostly accused of rather minor crimes it seems) to the Sydney area in 1788. ...

Jan 2, 2010 - Our Christmas
Well, what can I say? I would love to tell you about our fab Christmas Day BBQ on the beach in the wonderful Australian sunshine - instead, we are now living proof that it is not where you spend Christmas and New Year, but the people you spend it with that are important and the fact is that we really missed our family and friends. Our Christmas day dawned wet and (relatively) cold and stayed that way all day! Apparently, it was the coldest Christmas Day in Sydney for 100 years! Therefore, the Aussie stereotype of a Christmas Day BBQ on the beach will continue to allude us! Instead we spent the day just around our holiday park and also took a drive and a walk in the rain at one point, just to have a change of scenery! Whilst walking along, we saw what we assume was a Red Back Spider, at least it certainly fit the description of one, so we gave it a wide berth anyway. ... On the upside, a couple of fellow-travellers who we have met surprised us by leaving a small Christmas gift outside our door in the morning, which was completely unexpected and prompted us to share a bottle of wine with them.Well, what can I say?
