Sep 29, 2005 - Newcastle!

Aug 5, 2005 - Chris' pilgrimage

Allow me to set the scene. A fairly large and until recently largely industrialised city, with it's proud history firmly in ship building and coal mining. However it is emerging from well this industrial age by turning more to the service industry and building trendy flats facing the water where once were only warehouses and shipyards. It has suburbs called Jesmond and Wallsend and neighbouring towns of Stockton, Hexham and Gateshead. Has a proud sporting history. Can you guess where I am yet? That's right...Newcastle. On introducing myself...

Jul 27, 2005 - 24 hour train trip

So while I was typing this entry, my time ran out on the internet and the window closed, clearing everything I had written...so I am going to briefly resume what I was saying, than conclude and go do something with my last day in Adelaide. Tomorrow (Friday the 28th) I am taking the Indian-Pacific Train from Adelaide to Sydney, which will take 24 hours, as we are traversing half of southern Australia...think of going from Dallas to Atlanta by train! Speaking of which, America's train network really must be extended and improved upon, soon!!!...

Jun 21, 2005 - Afternoon in Sydney

We arrived in Sydney at half past 3 and caught another airport-hotel transfer bus to our hostel. This is our first backpackers' hostel (2 more to go in Christchurch and Wellington) and we are both very impressed; it's very clean, modern and has lots of great facilities like an internet café, travel desk and café. We have special card keys which are programmed with our room details so we have to use them in the lift to get to our floor as well as to enter our room - very high tech. Once we had sorted out a trip to the Blue Mountains for...

May 8, 2005 - Newcastle

It's never fun to wake up with a hangover. But this one for me was a killer. But, the road doesn't understand hangovers and neither do husbands. So we were off again - with one mandatory stop at McDonalds to soften the huge blow to my head. Btw, All the McD's here have McCafe's attached to them, where they sell cappucinos and cakes apparently competing now with Starbucks. Interesting... Fortunately we didn't have too far to drive. The next destination: Newcastle. What should have taken us 2 hours to get there took more like 6 bc we took the...

Apr 18, 2005 - Newcastle, Australia

Well there is nothing too extravagant or adventurous to mention as yet. I've been to a Knights football match (will post some cheerleader pics for Carsten when I remember to bring the camera cable with me), went to the Anzac dawn service on Newcastle beach and had some pretty deadly cocktails with my cousin (Lisa). Lisa and I went to a Vietnamese restaurant in Newcastle to end up sitting next to another table of Macleans (real Scottish ones). With one of them giving us a nice drunken Scottish tale: Did you know that Australia was...

Apr 14, 2005 - Job Hunting

Another long lapse in entries - mostly because there's far less going on now that I'm based in one place and engaged in the more mundane day to day activities. Got into Sydney 2 weeks ago, and straight into a room in a flat shared with Anne-Marie as her other flatmate had handily moved out about 2 days before, which was a bit of a result. No stay in hostel required, no flat hunting, nada :-) No job yet though, partly because there's not a great deal of 3 month java contracts around and partly because I'm finding it hard to motivate myself...

Mar 30, 2005 - Sydney again

Day 12-16 Flew back to sydney for another 5 days - no improvement in sydney's weather, still only in the low 20's. Did a bit of flat hunting, lunching, shopping and most importantly spent time with the boys. Drove up to Newcastle to stay the night with me ol' mates from school - Sonya and Melaine, and experience Melaine's brand spanking new 3 bdr house! Camera battery flat so no photos, but Melaine sending one thru in a week or so. Dave and I took Ferg to the Royal Easter Show. Got ourselves some bargains with the showbags, including a Bart...

Mar 18, 2005 - Port MacQuarie, Hunter Valley and Blacksmiths, NSW

In the morning we headed south towards the Hunter Valley and Wyndham Estates winery. We stopped outside Newcastle for lunch, then made our way to Wyndham Estates. The winery was set on a beautiful property, and the staff were extremely friendly. They let us try about 6 wines each, if not more -- we lost track, and the wines were excellent. We walked around the grounds for a while, then prepared to leave. Unfortunately, the camper van had other plans, and it would not start. Luckily for us, the winery staff were very helpful! A manager from...

Mar 9, 2005 - Newcastle

It was another long overnight journey from Byron Bay to Newcastle. It's really only these long journeys that you appreciate the sheer size of Australia. We were planning to spend a night in Newcastle with Kiran's family friends on our way to Sydney. Aunty Susan showed us the sights on a drive around Newcastle and made us feel right at home. She even cooked a delicious roast for dinner which we polished off with wine and lots of laughs, courtesy of her friend Judy. They even convinced us to sit through a scary TV programme on parasites found...

Mar 6, 2005 - Newcastle, Australia

Hey, so on our first Australia University this week - Newcastle University! Its a beautiful campus, right in the middle of the bush, not far from the ocean. So I'm walking through all these trees between buildings, and you can hear all sorts of birds and insects making their usual sounds as the wind blows through the trees. Its about high 70's here, in shorts and a tank top which is so nice you don't even know! I plan on going to the beach this weekend in Sydney to catch up on a little color before the autumn comes up again. So far everyone...

Feb 14, 2005 - Eastern dash

So after beautiful Frasier Island we headed back inland and made our way down the coast to Noosa where we enthusiastically took part in a surf lesson. It's a bit of a sensitive subject but in a nutshell Mr P did well and Mrs P did very well! After a few days hanging around Noosa we noticed big black rain clouds approaching so we packed up our gear and headed down to Brisbane for a couple of days. From there onto Surfers Paradise for a quick afternoon on the beach - couldn't get out in the surf as it was far too full on and hairy for our...
