Mar 22, 2012 - Final wine tour
Our wedding anniversary today, 4 years and they said it wouldn't last :) I remembered anyway. (Thanks Ray. It's not that I forgot or anything, it's just that I remembered last week it was coming up but we don't buy cards or anything so it was nice to forget and have you remind me by wishing me a Happy Anniversary when we woke up. Ang) We had a little drive only 2 hours to the Hunter valley where there are loads of vineyards and the prime wines are Semillon and Shiraz. Really wanted to get into the Semillon since we arrived in OZ and they...

Jul 22, 2011 - The Hunter Valley
A loud buzzing, crackling sound jumped us out of our sleep right at midnight. Confused, we looked around the room to discover that it was the room's radio clock and the default alarm ringing. Worried that it would wake up Izzy and annoyed by the sound, we scrambled to try to push the off button in the dark. Unsuccessful, I just yanked at its cord and pulled it out of its electrical outlet. Suddenly all was quiet, which we all appreciated. Thankfully, Izzy's slept right through all of the commotion. Since there was no hurry to get going in...

Jul 21, 2011 - A Lighthouse, Macadamia Nuts, and Some Wine
Screw-top wine bottles. A sheep in the tasting room. Kangaroos hopping among the grapevines. We are definitely in Australian wine country! We are currently in the Hunter Valley, one of New South Wales wine regions, about 2 hours north of Sydney. In some ways it resembles a lot of what we are used to in a wine region, with its hodgepodge of tasting rooms (called cellar doors here), boutique motels, and 5-star restaurants nestled among the vineyards. In some ways it is different, with more farms and orchards mixed among the wineries, lots of...

Jul 14, 2011 - Hunter Valley Region - July 12 - 15
Following lunch in Singleton, we have arrived in Cessnock, our base in the Hunter Valley region for the next couple of days. We are SO glad we did not have the van behind us for the trip up here - this side of the country is so very different from the West - we just do not get the mountainous, torturous, driving experiences at home that we are facing here, every where we go!! Have had some pretty hairy moments, but the scenery is just awesome (when the driver can get a quick glance at it!!) Off to visit as many wineries as we can find...

Feb 23, 2011 - Hunter Valley & Katoomba
Just heard about the earthquake in New Zealand... We are heading to Christchurch, NZ, but not until next Wednesday... hopefully it will be in good shape by the time we get there... so far we've missed floods, a cyclone, and an earthquake! We just spent 1.5 days in Hunter Valley, New South Wales (NSW)(we've crossed a state line from Queensland into NSW... they do timezones oddly here, traveling north we moved ahead an hour, traveling east we moved ahead 30 mins, and traveling south we lost an hour) We were supposed to do a hot air balloon...

Feb 18, 2011 - Cessnock
13th February. Another dull, drizzly day, we are heading to Cessnock in the Hunter Valley. We arrived at the Big 4, Valley Vineyard Tourist Park at lunchtime, it’s an older C.P. but we are staying for at least three nights. We went up town to see what’s around, it seems an old town even though there is a Woollies, Coles, Aldi, and IGA as well as lots of the usual stores. I think most of the attractions are in surrounding Cessnock, we will take a drive to some of the wineries tomorrow. Sue and Alan are here too, so we had the usual Happy...

Feb 6, 2010 - Wine trail
Over 200 vineyards alone in the area - where do you start? Found a very nice small vineyard called Broken Wood and of course it would have been rude not to try their products. Also a brewery making a local beer called Blue Tongue - they have a sample platter of all six types. Finally the local cheese factory. A good relaxing day. Be careful! the NSW police are paranoid about drink driving. I was pulled over for random breath test at 11.00 this morning even before we had started!

Feb 5, 2010 - On the way to the wineries
Left the Blue Mountains and drove north east for about 250km along the eastern foot hills of the great dividing range. A pretty twisting route called the Putty Road with virtually no other traffic. Eventually turned east into the Hunter Valley one of Australia’s wine growing areas. Lunch at a winery (where else) in the Upper Hunter called Nightingale Wines run by a Brit from Dorset. An excellent Chardonnay. Then onto our base in the town of Cessnock in the Lower Hunter. Hopefully we have left the storms behind.

Jul 21, 2009 - Day 1. Sydney to Cessnock
This was effectively Day one of the trip. The first time we had the van on roads that were not fully familiar and the first time we would be relying on caravan parks. For our international readers, Cessnock is the centre of the Hunter Valley. Home of some of the best wines produced in Australia. I can’t think how many times Alison and I have done this trip before, usually with only an overnight bag and a credit card. It was never like this before. After packing everything we needed, plus a few things we didn’t (and less a few things we...

Today was a day filled with wine tours... We hit as many places as we could..We stopped at a brand new restaurant on the hill side.. there was a note at the side of the park area... Do not go on the grass as this is where the helicopter lands... we ended the day at the Hunter Valley Cheese Factory..There were more wineries that we could handle.. we tried to coordinate our travel but it was overwhelming.. we could have stayed here a month... there are over 120 wineries... and we got to 6 today... we will try harder next time.
