John drove us from Sydney to Canberra where we spent a really cold first night at a caravan site we suspected had previously been a detention centre before visiting the parliament where no expense had been spared in building a replacement venue in 1988 to house the senate and house of representatives - lashings of Italian marble; we had a most informative tour of the relevant parts and then stayed for Question Time which was not unlike a Punch & Judy show, similar to Westminster and very entertaining when you were only yards away from the action. ... Kay We left Canberra nad drove straight home only stopping for morning tea and lunch. ... Canberra is a slightly odd and surreal place as cities whose sole reason for existence is for the function of government always are. ... I arrived at midday on Saturday and as I pulled up the campervan close to the main shopping district and did a double take of a small sign which stated that the charging time for parking was between 8-6 weekdays and 6-12 on Saturdays which struck me as a bit odd initially, but then the penny dropped that this city revolves around the working time of those in government.Canberra is a slightly odd and surreal place as cities whose sole reason for existence is for the function of government always are. ...
