2/9/2013 A leisure morning as we are driving to Rio Gallegos today where the campground is located 25K from town with nothing exciting to do, except watch the river flow past. After doing our shopping and filling the rig we were off to Rio Gallegos. Much nicer drive today as the winds were down.

Another long day with a few wildlife breaks. Guanacos and Rhea all day but at lunchtime we (20 of us)visited the bay of San Julian on the Atlantic and took a boat trip to some islands. The weather was kind but we still needed to wrap up warm before we put our life jackets on and got on a boat with a woman and her husband and her 1 month old son! The woman (Natalie) spoke impeccable English and she explained all about Commersons dolphins, small and black and white and swimming all round the boat, and Magellanic penguins as well as a black...

Dec 19, 2010 - Rio Gallegos

Bon and I got up and to the bus terminal (just a block away) by 6:30 am, it opened 15 min later and at first the computer system was acting up just like yesterday. Finally, the gal gave a great sigh and all went well. We shelled out our 362p ($91 US) for buses to get us to Ushuaia from here...our most costly travel yet (other than plane tickets). We are in high tourist season for sure, no locals on these buses! While in line to get our tickets yesterday we ran into travellers, Shaun and Helen, who we now met in a cafe and exchanged stories...

May 19, 2010 - La déviation de la Route 40 - 2ème étape

Nous voilà à notre 3243ème gare routière du voyage! Pour les 12 heures du trajet Comodoro Rivadavia - Rio Gallegos, on s'est fait plaisir: pour 3 euros de plus, on a goûté aux joies du bus cama (qui a dit "sutra"?) Seulement trois files de sièges, en cuir, très confortables et très inclinables, ambiance business class de l'avion, avec vin à volonté... On saute dans un autre bus, pour arriver quatre heures plus tard, enfin, à El Calafate.

I got woken up by the rising sun at 6am and realized that the bus was still stationary. The bus has hardly moved from the point it stopped last night before I went to sleep. That means we have spent about eight hours not going anywhere. Although I did have some very good sleep the thought of not knowing how long we will be stuck here for started to worry me. Nous sommes partis de Tolhuin tout impregnés de la bonne humeur de Roberto, malgré le vent froid qui souffle aujourd'hui. Puis ça commence: alors que nous nous perdons dans les rues de Rio Grande a la recherche d'un bon endroit ou "stopper", un gars nous claxone et sans que nous demandions rien, il nous emmene au bon endroit. Puis le jeune Donald avec qui nous sympatisons bien nous prend jusqu'a la frontiere chiliene. Jun 23, 2008 - Rio Gellegos - "Where are we?"

A special journal entry for the town of Rio Gallegos - a place we had no intention of going to and even at the point of arrival we had no idea we were there. The short story goes that we boarded a flight from Buenos Aires to go down to the south of Argentina to a place called El Calafate. It was scheduled to be a 3 hour flight but after a bit of circling took 4 hours during which time the pilot would have made a long announcement in spanish followed by a short English announcement of "please be ready for landing soon". We survived yet another overnighter bus ride down to Río Gallegos...pronounced with so much slurring no one could understand me when I pronounced it in my northern spanish. So I improvised and just slurred the whole second word together and suddenly everyone knew what i was talking about. A possible new strategy??? Gisteren om 6 uur ‘s morgens uit Ushuaia vertrokken naar Rio Gallegos. Het traject is op het laatste uur na identiek aan dat van de weg van Punta Arenas naar Ushuaia. Nu draaiden we naar rechts richting argentijnse grens waar de douane vaststelde dat de rechtervoorband veel te plat stond en diende vervangen te worden, zodat we een klein half uurtje verloren bij de grens. De douane ambtenaar die de chauffeur en begeleider van de bus bijna dagelijks te zien krijgt, kon het niet laten van met zijn camera wat foto’s te nemen van de zwoegende...

Jan 23, 2008 - St Julian to Rio Gallegos

After a night on the beer with some English travellers we headed south to St Julian (to break up the 17 hour bus journey to Rio Gallegos). A quiet town in a most spectacular setting on the coast. Fantastic light due to the clear air. John`s first words on arrival at Rio Gallegos were that we would stay at least two nights to take a break from long bus journeys however, within an hour the thought of two days in another dusty, uninspiring town was too much for him so plans were made to move on the next day to El Calafate in the mountains on...

Nov 28, 2007 - Rio Gallegos: Only another 10 hours to go...

How many hours have we got left to wait now? I think this day should be called the longest day in honour of the amount of waiting and travelling hours that were raked up. The ultimate destination was Ushuaia the southern most city and point in Argentina but to get there from El Chalten was by no means a hop, skip and a jump of a journey. We had to check out of our hostel at 10am then had to kill time in El Chalten until the 6pm bus left for El Calafate. So I thought I would give Chris a break on writing this blog..ok, well he loves it but I just wanted to kill some time as well and he has banned me from looking at celebrity gossip sites so here I am. Currently we are in a town called Rio Gallegos which we arrived in yesterday from El Calafete.
