Feb 6, 2011 - Salta

February 5 I arrived in Salta on Wednesday morning after 12 hours in a cama-suite bus. They played the movie "Benjamin Button" which is a very good and very long movie with Brad Pitt, so of course I had to watch the whole thing so didn't fall asleep until almost 1:30 am. I woke up to the bus attendant wavering over me with a breakfast tray. I swear these buses are like airplanes, only better (except for the food, which is worse, if that's possible). The guidebook decribed Salta has having many colonial buildings, but this turned out to be...

Oct 29, 2010 - Salta - Pics Need Captions

Bon's pack wheels on one side gave out last nite right in front of a hardware store w/ had wheels! This morning after another paltry brkfst. we bought the wheels and nuts and bolts and a young fellow working at the hotel w/ tools drilled holes and helped install/replace the broken wheel. Works well and have the spare fore when the other side gives out. Bus to Salta left almost an hour late (llam), thru citrus orchards, hills and mtns in the distance, quite a change! Another clear, sunny day but we do continue the FLATS. Reaching a place...

Oct 17, 2010 - Argentina - Brief but Delicious

We never planned to spend any time in Argentina but like many times before on this trip, our plans changed! We couldn't have been happier with our decision to exit Bolivia in the South and head into Argentina. Arriving in Salta, exhausted after 2 days and 1 night of solid travelling, we were planning to put the feet up for a bit. Our hostel owner asked us to join in the braai that night. I think it was just an excuse for him to relax and have a few beers but it was our 1st taste of Argentinean steak - and it did not disappoint. Wow - i...

Aug 14, 2010 - Argentina - Salta and Cafayate

Hi again, We got the bus from Jujuy to Salta on 10th August, and had a fun and rather late first night at a BBQ organised by our hostel (owned by a friendly English guy who used to be a second-hand car salesman and whose description of the hostel on the website is aptly a little ´creative´). Met some Irish guys and an American at the BBQ (who showed us some brilliant tricks with cards/ nails/ coins which we´ll be trying out on you when we return), so we spent some time with them during our time in Salta. We puzzled our way together through...

Jul 28, 2010 - Cafaete not complete

We jumped on the 4 hour bus to cafaette which passed through some beautiful land. At first t reminded me completely of San jose with rolling hills in the distance. Shortly after it changed to rocky cliffs and a river running through this steep valley. The rocks were red and white and black in color. They layered up to look like pancakes. Some were sharp and violen looking while others were rounded and smooth. People relate this area of the country to the red rocks I think in Arizona or colorodo. They are very famous here in Argentina. We...

Jul 27, 2010 - Salta

We successfully arrive into salta at 12 am. We are greeted by a girl advertising for a hostel. This is an average occurance in south america. The girl used to work a Loki and says these hostels are nice so we accept and she pays for our cab. We pack 4 girls in the back of the cab and head to the hostel. We order a pizza and head to bed. The next morning we woke up for our big day in salta. We moved to a different hostel closer to town. I went to find a laundry place and research for the next few days in wine country. The town is so pleasant...

Jul 26, 2010 - Quick update

Hey all, sorry I have not updated in so long, there has been no electricity to charge my IPHONE and no internet. I am working on writing my journals for Potossi silver mines, uyuni, the salt flats, San Pedro Chile, and now in Argentina. It is weird being back in civilization. I didnt realize how crazy Bolivia was until I got out of there. My digestion and brain area little bit confused from the lack of propper food and lifestyle. Salta seems like a good place to get a hair cut and pull myself together a little bit. When I got off the bus...

Jun 20, 2010 - Salta & Cafayate

I have just returned from a night in Cafayate and am waiting to go to the airpot to go to Buenos Aires. I have absolutley loved Cafayate. It is 4 hours from Salta and is a wine growing region. Going by bus to Cafayate I saw a couple get off the bus each holding something in a blanket. In the blue banket was a baby and in the pink blanket was a small dog being carried off the bus!!The area is surrounded by red and orange rock formations and canyons. I would have liked to stay longer and only had time to bike to a few vineyards. You cant try...

May 12, 2010 - South of Salta - La Quebrada de las Conchas

It was an early morning 6am start today - was up in time for the first of two excursions from Salta. I must complement the hostel I am staying in - Las Rejas on Calle General Guemes 569 - definitely one of the Much Better ones. I was already impressed with the cleanliness of the place and ratings soared again when I got freshly squeezed orange juice, hot coffee and warm, chewy croissants to kick start the day! The Quebrada de las Conchas roughly translates as the Seashell Gorge Valley and starts about 60km south of Salta ending in the...

May 10, 2010 - Salta, Salta, Salta

Arrival in town at 9am... El Corre Caminos hostel. Good enough for one night. I will move tomorrow to the far nicer and much cheaper Las rejas round the corner. Hour long run up along the hill to San Bernardo along the stations of the cross.. Will come back tomorrow via the teleferico/cable car.. the less sweaty option. All the street names are after the various generals who rose up against and defeated the conquistadores over the years.. San Martin, Belgrano, Mitre, Guemes.. Salta is lovely town and combines modern everything with a...

Apr 29, 2010 - Land of the Giant Cactii

Today was my last full day in the Salta region here in Argentina. I've stayed here as long as I did in Patagonia for due reason. The scenery here is simply amazing. Today's trip was up into the mountains southwest of Salta. The trip was more about the journey than the destination though. We drove along the bottom of the valley to our first 2 stops being old bridges, with great views of the valley. In some ways I'm glad i walked across the bridge and was not in the bus, just in case the bridge finally decided it had "had its day". After a...
