Oct 20, 2009 - Over to Argentina - Salta

We took the 8 hour bus from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile to Salta, Argentina - which actually felt like it involved more time sitting at the Chilean and Argentinian immigration than actually going anywhere on the bus!! Following advice we hired a car and drove up to the Andean town of Cachi. ... The drive up was stunning - although a little windy and bumpy at times, which just meant I got to practice my rally driving! We had a lovely lunch up in the main square of Cachi and then headed back down to Salta, as we wanted to get back before it was dark as dealing with Argentinian drivers was hard enough in the daylight! The following day was our one year wedding anniversary and Adrian surprised me with a hotel for the night. ... After all those hostels we really appreciated the white fluffy towels and crisp white sheets! The swimming pool and yummy breakfast weren't too bad either! On our final day in Salta we took the cable car up Mount San Bernardo which gives fantastic views over the city. ...

In Salta angekommen, war ich froh, mal wieder englisch-sprachige Leute zu treffen, mit den Franzosen war es mir etwas zu anstregenden mit der Zeit. ... Am naechsten Tag kam dann Brandon, den Lisa in Patagonien kennen gelernt hatte, mit ein paar Freunden in Salta an. ... Am Ende unseres kleinen Roadtrips sind wir in Salta angekommen, einer etwas groesseren und ziemlich schoenen Stadt im Norden Argentiniens. ... Tim -- Ravi and I never expected to be in Salta when we started our South American trek, but there´s a lot to be said about this sizeable Argentine town. ... Mostly, I liked that Salta was far away from San Pedro de Atacama! But although escaping Chile is always wonderful, Salta stands up on its own as a great place to spend a day or so. ... I always grumble about climbing to the top of things we weren´t interested in seeing in the first place, but I have to admit, Salta is pretty from on high, and the garden and waterfalls on top of the hill are kind of nice. ...

Poor Helen was still feeling rough this morning and yep you guessed it we had another long drive day to do in order to get to Salta. ... We had to have the truck checked for anything dodgy by the police but we were soon on our way! We got stopped once more on our way by some police who also wanted to check our passports - I think they were bored and needed something to do! It was a long drive to Salta but we made it in once piece. ...
