ANNE & MIKES TRIP

Dec 25, 2006 - Merry Xmas from the Lakes District!

Ric:¡Hola! ¡Feliz Navidad! We're in Bariloche for Xmas. Its an old swiss/German colony so theres a bit of an alpine feel and lots of choclatiers. It's nestled amongst snow capped mountains by the side of a huge deep blue lake. Very pretty. We had a few last night and ended up in an Irish bar serving Guinness in a bottle with a widget! (Imported from Ireland) Not bad once we'd got over the idea of drinking the lovely black stuff from a bottle. We've checked into a nice communal hostal with lots of gringos from around the world so we're...

Dec 14, 2006 - Bariloche

Full day, kayaking in to the morning and trekking in the afternoon. Took two man kayaks out on a stunning lake, was raining on and off but at least it meant the water was pretty flat. Really enjoyed it, would love to take it up... After three hours had luch and went to a nearby park to climb a peak. Pretty damn scary! Hike took about an hour in the howling wind up a steep cliff face. Had to climb some pretty hairy rocks and cross a few logs tacked to the side of the cliff over a steep drop. The top however was sooo worth it :) Hit a...

Traveller Trash

Dec 8, 2006 - Bariloche, Argentina

The bus trip from Puerto Varas to San Carlos de Bariloche (aka Bariloche) took approximately 5/6 hours crossing through dense forest and the lower hills of the majestic Andes. It was a nice scenic drive and the bus stopped and waited at the border controls while we got our passports stamped. Bariloche is a beautiful alpine town situated on the foothills of the Andes. The town is surrounded by snow-dusted mountains and beautifully situated on the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi. The main thing that stands out is the strong Bavarian feel to the...

Sep 12, 2006 - Bariloche, Argentina

Low-shrub bushes dot the gentle slopes with browns and dull greens acting, in a way, as a broker separating the crystal blue lakes and rivers below and the majestic, towering and jagged mountain peaks above. Our bus rolled steadily past all of this scenery on what for it was just another day in the mountains. But the mountain peaks lining the highway from San Martin de los Andes to Bariloche are breathtaking. They are so stunning as to leave the viewer without words and a slight doubt that these kids of places exist outside of movies. And...

Sep 11, 2006 - Neuquen to Bariloche

Neuquen (09:10) to Bariloche (15:00) Once again I was quite surprised by how organized bus trips are here in Argentina. Even though this time I had a semi-cama service (slightly less wide chairs) the trip went by in no time. The first part from Puerto Madryn to Bariloche I basically slept through. However the second part from Neuquen to Bariloche was definitely worth the discomfort of sitting on the bus for so many hours. It was for the most part an uphill journey into the mountains following the river Limay on the left side up until the...

My trip to Argentina

Sep 10, 2006 - Bariloche

We flew into pouring rain and very dark skies in Bariloche, not a good Start! Thankfully that was the only rainy day we had and the weather quickly changed into gorgeous spring days with clear blue skies. We checked into Hostel 1004, which was well recommended. The views from there over the whole town and across the lake to the mountains was beautiful. Unfortunately the serentity of the place was disturbed by a very large group of very large students whose very loud drinking games every night took from the atmosphere. We did meet some...

Linda and Donal 2006

Jun 27, 2006 - San Carlos de Bariloche Gateway to the Patagonia.

The bus ride to Bariloche was smooth, I can't stop mentioning how comfortable the buses are in Argentina. I got there at around 8 in the morning and went to a Hostal and checked into a dorm room, there was only one other guy in the dorm from Buenos Aires. It was raining all day, which was good because that ment snow on the mountain and I planned to go ski the next day. I just walked around the city, very european, they call it the switzerland of Argentina. I went to trek at Cerro Otto, supposed to have very good views of the city from up...

May 15, 2006 - Bariloche - Argentina

Hooray - back to the mate drinking country of big juicy steak and fantastic wine!! Arrived in Bariloche after a 5 hour bus ride across the border. The border crossing was very smooth with no problems at all. Arrived to find Bariloche in the hands of some very grotty weather, however the place itself is very beautiful and reminds us both of a Swiss ski town (The town is actually a ski resort in the winter). There are many little cafes serving delicious hot chocolate, which we just had to try in order to keep ourselves thawed. We took a...

What can i say about our 1 day in Bariloche.... well, i guess it is a very beautiful town set amidst national park and on the banks of a lake lined with typical andean snow capped mountains. I can also that the highlight of our stay in this town was eating my first Argentinian steak.... that say more about what we did or didnt do in this town rather than how good the steak was !! anyway, the steak was quite impressive nontheless... and cheap. its funny though.... when you order steak here, well, thats what you get.... steak.... no veg, no...

Apr 8, 2006 - San Carlos de Bariloche

So Tomas's cold didn't give up that easily and after 5 days, it was time to go visit a doctor. We ended up at this fantastic hotel on Lago Gutierrez, but it is 15 Km from town. But very much worth it. The owner of the hostel we were staying at knew we were probably going to move to another centrally located hostel, so he offered a place at his other accomodation, a 34 room hotel in a beautiful setting at an unreasonably low price. We are the only ones here and naturally opted for the best room. A great way to end our two months in South...
