Misiones province in far north-east Argentina, along with nearby Paraguay and Brazil, boast a number of ruins of 17th Century Jesuit Misions - religious communes for 4000 - 5000 people. Basically, the politicians of the day suspected religious uprisings and so kicked the Jesuits out in 1767 and subsequent wars with Portuguese and Paraguayan invaders reduced the place to some red brick ruins that don't really offer much to the imagination.
