Jan 5, 2007 - Option to climb 'Franke' peak (4900m) or 'El Salto' (4200m)

Up at 4:30am this morning - yuck - and left by 6:00am. It was still dark and a bit cloudy, but not enough to warrant headlamps. We started out slowly and I was feeling much better and stronger than last night. Early morning is such a beautiful time of the day to hike, we even saw a couple of guanacos in the distance. The trail on Franke was super and night & day from yesterday's mess! And what made it even more enjoyable was there was no pressure to make the top by a certain time. Jan 4, 2007 - Climbing 'San Bernardo' (4400m) in a journey of 8 hours. Return to Refuge

Up again at 6:30am and off at 8am to San Bernardo Peak. We started off a little quickly which tired us out, we should know better. We carried on crossing a couple of creeks, which was very interesting to say the least (pretty tricky footing), and then started up the very steep & rocky trail. Approximately half way up we were crossing boulder fields that were also steep and quite unstable. Every now & then we would lose the trail and it took us awhile to realize Fernando liked to take shortcuts through the rock fields. From that point...

Jan 3, 2007 - Arenales (3300m) and Lomas Blancas (3600m), returning to Refuge

We both awoke at 6:30am not feeling so great. We had some water and then laid back down for another hour - that did the trick, we feel much better! By 9:30am we start off slowly to Lomas Blancas which is 3550m. Within an hour we have developed our rhythm and reached the summit in 2 hours. It was a very foggy day but fairly warm with minimal wind. To help acclimatize at this new altitude, Fero busies himself making a bivouac wall/wind shelter and then moves on to constructing an Inukshuk. Around the Inukshuk we spelled Canada with the...
