Dec 6, 2010 - Esquel

Today we got up later than I expected since I thot we'd be moving on. By noon we headed out on a hike to an overlook, Cerro Amigo, just 4 km round trip...great view of valley and town/agriculture below. Reminded me of Bitterroot valley but much narrower, no river, and steeper mtns. Very scenic...hike down and picked up packs left w/ Dona Eugenia, unfortunately, Jake forgot to pick up his sweatshirt he'd left halfway up trail. A short wait for him and the to bus stop where we learned that the next bus lvs at 5! Oh well, it' s only a 2 hr+...

Dec 13, 2009 - El Bolson/Esquel/Trevelin

After spending a couple days in the towns north of Bariloche, Laura and I decided to head south, to El Bolson, Esquel, Trevelin, and the Parque National Los Alerces. The drive was beautiful, alternating from mountain valleys and forests to high desert, with few signs of civilization wherever we went. Although we spent a lot of time in the car, we did get to do a few things in the towns we visited. In El Bolson, we went shopping the artisenal fair, which was full of hippies making everything from pottery to jewelry (a staple hippie good) to...

Feb 10, 2007 - Esquel, Chubut Province, Patagonia

Saturday 10th February Arrived in Esquel early this morning, after a very long and tiring 27 hour bus journey from El Calafate! It is a pretty, afluent, little town situated 293kms south of Bariloche, with tree lined avenues, and a magnificent backdrop of mountains in each direction you turn. Esquel was originally an offshoot of the Welsh colonies (such as Gaiman which I visited on my journey south) to the east. It is a ski resort in the winter months and all year round it is the base for exploring Los Alerces National park (the Alerces...

Apr 5, 2006 - Our destination - El Bolson

After a reasonable 12 hours on the bus, we disembarked at El Bolson, a town just north of Esquel, and a wanna be hippie town, in Julia's expert opinion (coming from the world's finest hippie town, Santa Cruz, CA.; she has every right!). The only casualty was Tomas, who had become the recipient of a nasty cold, courtesy of the woman from Minneapolis who sat next to us at dinner a few nights previous with conditions that could only be described as ¨should be in quarantine for the next 48 hours¨. With a TV, comfy bed and lots of great medicine...

Feb 1, 2006 - Esquel

Well here we go into our last month. 24 more days of fun in South America. Today we went on the Patagonia Express a steam train known as 'La Trochita' supposedly because of the track being only 75cm wide. A brilliant ride through the open plains of Patagonia which would look even better in winter. On the return to Esquel we went to what must be our most visited stop on our trip the bus station. This time to catch the bus combo to get us to El Calafate. First up the overnight bus ride east to Comodoro Rivadavia. Day 341 complete

Jan 7, 2005 - Esquel

This is the Old Patagonian Express, made famous by the Bruce Chatwin book, not that I've read it. It runs from Esquel down a beautiful valley to the Mapuche hamlet of Nahuel Pan. It has beautiful carriages with wooden painted benches and wood burning stoves. It's a real tourist attraction now and only goes part of the old route, but was magnificant in full steam In the afternoon went for a cabalgata on Pablo the horse. The saddles are huge western ones covered in sheepskin and very comfy, we climbed a steep rocky mountain side for wonderful...

Sep 21, 2004 - A bus through the Lake District

The first part of the bus journey to the coast was very pleasant. We hadn't really seen much of the Lake District when we were in Bariloche as we hadn't really seen much of anything. So, it was a nice surprise to be bussed alongside lakes and mountain passes until Esquel where we had to change bus for Trelew. The second bus was not as nice. Very reminescent of the Colca Canyon Sleep Deprevation Trek every time the bus stopped to let passengers get on or off the bus the lights would come on and music would come on. A very disturbed night's...
