Jan 21, 2006 - Paradise Harbour / Lemaire Channel

The 21st we went through the Gerlache Strait to Paradise Bay, on the Antarctic Peninsula. The Chillian base is there. We were surrounded by huge white glacial mountains with aqua blue fissures. The glaciers in this area are known to calf quite a bit. While on shore, we heard a small explosion sound, Mom & Dad were able to catch a glimpse of the calving. Jan 1, 2006 - Antarctica - 64º 49'S / 63º 30'W - Temp -4ºC (23:50hrs)

We awoke this morning to our expedition leader, Don's regular words - 'Good morning, good people, welcome to the day' this time also welcoming the new year. Following the exertions of the previous evening, we opted for a more tranquil zodiac shore landing and hike on Danco Island, home to over 1500 pairs of Gentoo penguins and their chicks.
