Friday, January 30 Couverville Island and Neko Harbor On Friday morning, we cruised down the Gerlache Strait and made our way into the Errera Channel to Cuverville Island (a deviation from our planned stop at Danco Island) for a viewing of more Gentoo penguins. During lunch we passed another cruise ship, which turned out to be Le Boreal, the one we sailed last August in the Arctic. The afternoon excursion was to Neko Harbor on the Andvord Bay, our first proper landing on the actual mainland of Antarctica. A Weddell seal calmly welcomed us...

Dec 15, 2007 - The Gerlache Strait and Errera Channel

We've continued further south during the night and as the wind has died down, the weather is quite nice and the seas are calm. Just after breakfast, we come across a group of humpback whales, so everyone rushes out to the deck to take photos. We continue through the Gerlache Strait to Orrin Island. Conditions are not good for a landing, so we take a ride around the bay in the zodiacs. The icebergs are an amazing shade of blue and white. On one of the smaller "berglets", we come across a crab eater seal with tremendous scarring on his belly...
