Finding My Peace: A Hawaiian Airbnb Experience
Jun 6, 2020
I recently decided that it was time for a new experience. Time to travel somewhere I had never been before. I have read that spending my well-earned money on travel is a much better way to create long-lasting happiness, and it was time for a change in my life. I have some friends that had stayed in a couple of Airbnb’s for business trips. They promised me that it would be a good way to save some money while getting access to a more personalized and homey atmosphere in a new setting.
It took me a while to decide where I wanted to start my adventures. I didn’t want to go somewhere that I might have a language barrier, at least not my first time. Although I did want it to feel a little exotic, different than my usual day-to-day. I was looking for some kind of serenity. After debating for a few days, I landed on traveling to Hawaii, and I booked my first Airbnb vacation.
Not knowing exactly what to expect when I got off my flight into Kailua-Kona, I called a taxi to take me to my previously booked private guesthouse. I sat in the car barely able to contain my excitement. We pulled onto the property and my jaw dropped. The property was filled with tropical trees, blooming flowers and beautifully landscaped lawns. It was nothing short of paradise.
I made my way into the studio guesthouse not to be disappointed. The inside was just as immaculately designed and decorated as the exterior. From the sparkling full wall windows to the frosted glass pantry doors, every inch of this bungalow was the perfection I had hoped for. I was instantly put at ease.
Going to Hawaii for the first time, I chose an Airbnb that boasted of ocean views. I have heard many people talk about how beautiful this island is, but it was more tantalizing than I ever could have imagined.
The backdoor of the guesthouse opened to a green lawn that overlooked the ocean. I spent more than one evening standing in complete silence watching the sun sinking slowly into the sea creating a vibrant wash of vermillion, tangerine, alabaster and golden-tinged swirls across the sky.
Each day I chose a different hike to take. I explored volcanoes, waterfalls and beaches, each giving me a different feeling of oneness with the world. Each giving me a new part of nature at which to wonder.
Upon suggestion by my Airbnb host, I decided not to stop short at exploring the wonders I could find on land. Enjoying the mystery of the name, I chose to start with Kua Bay, home of the Magic Sands beach.
Not sure I was ready to try out surfing, I chose to go snorkeling with some gear provided to me by the Airbnb. Being summer, it was the perfect time of year for my first snorkeling excursion. The water was lukewarm, calm and crystal clear.
If someone had told me beforehand that life under the sea could amaze me more than Hawaii already had, I just wouldn’t have believed them. Of course, the sea life was not capable of letting me down. I ended up spending a couple of hours delighting in the rich colors of the coral and the many fish, each doing their own unique water dances.
My decision to travel to Hawaii may have been somewhat sporadic, but it is one that I will never regret. When I sit and think about it now, I am able to reach deep within myself and harness that same inner-peace that I felt then. Each day was a gem, providing me with new little trinkets of wisdom and purity. I think it will be time to travel again soon. Until then, I look back on my experience in Hawaii with happiness in my mind and peace in my heart.
