My weather app informed me that the skies would be clear and it wouldn’t be too cold (well too cold for here anyway) so I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to photograph the amazing mountains that surround El Chalten.

I set the alarm for 5am, wanting to make sure I was in position and ready for when the sunlight hit those mountains. Even though official sunrise was 6:35am, it was still very light outside as I made my way to the trek up to Mirador de los Condores. The lookout is approximately 40 minutes from our hotel but the first 20 minutes of the trek up was just that, up!

For this time of the morning it certainly got the heart pumping! Believe it or not, I am not the only mad person to give up sleep to photograph the sunrise and this sunrise certainly did not disappoint.

Most people headed back after the sun was starting to fully hit the mountains, but I stayed to watch the colours change from magenta, to pink, to gold and finally full sunlight. I got chatting to three fellow photographers and as our fingers were by this time frozen and I knew Craig wouldn’t be stirring until at least 8am, we decided to head to a local café for coffee. Its always so nice to chat to fellow travellers about where they have been and where they are headed.

Taking today a little easier, Craig and I decided to head back to los Condores and look for the namesake; the condors who use the air currents to cruise for prey. Unfortunately, the wind had dropped again but it was still a fantastic view!

As we had had such a terrible night’s sleep (it was SO hot and they are not geared for the heat over here) Craig opted for a quiet afternoon while I went exploring the other side of the river. Rock climbing is very big over here and I spent some time watching two kids being taught how to get to the top.

Rest assured, it’s certainly not something I am planning anytime soon!
