Morning from Camp

Radiation

Gifford House Fruita

Chimney Rock

October 9, 2019

We awoke to a mild, but very windy morning. (I don’t believe it got anywhere near freezing overnight.)

We partially took the “out and back” scenic route with the start at the park Visitor’s Center. We thought we might be able to hike the Great Wash Trail but the dirt road to the trail head was a bit much for Miss Daisy! Instead we found a place to park and walked the dirt road through parts of the wash, about 2 miles. This area was apparently near uranium mining as there was a warning about radiation and not staying in the area for more than a day!

It was noon when we arrived at the Guilford House which sold house made goods from produce from Fruita. Unfortunately, we missed the bake goods other than the “pies for two.” We had lunch as the wind picked up even more.

We realized that we did not want to spend 2 days in Bryce where the high will be in the low 40’s. Went to the Torrey Visitor Center that was nicely set up with tables and chairs so people could use their WiFi. I was able to upload pictures and do a little research on camps we need to book. Our new plans are: 10/10 Escalante, 10/11 Bryce, 10-12/13 Zion, 10/14 Page, 10-15/ Grand Canyon, 10-17/18 Las Vegas.

Like European churches, we have had enough buttes, cliffs in the Capitol Reef style! The wind is rocking the rig. It is only .7 mile to Café Diablo where we have a 5:00 dinner reservation. We had planned to walk there and back in daylight but it is way too windy.

Tomorrow we will drive the scenic byway Hwy 12 to Escalante.
