Summer 2019 travel blog

Wednesday 21 - 22 August

Took in 11 locks on Wednesday and 16 locks on Thursday, all ascending. We’ve developed a bit of a routine going into locks but it hasn’t been without some problems. Earlier on Wednesday we had problems with two locks so were delayed over 2 hours whilst the VNF (very helpful) sorted out the issues. The average ascent in these locks are 3.5m and we’re spending near enough 15 minutes in each lock.

Friday 23 August

A bit of a milestone. After going through 12 locks (of which the last 8 were very deep (a rise of over 50m) – by the end we got a routine together whereby Gen would take both aft and bow lines with him up the ladder as I couldn’t throw them up 6+metres) and we reached the summit - 1100m above sea level. Yay – it should be all descending from now on.

At the summit you need to go through a 5km tunnel (one way system and the speed limit is 4 km/h). After an hour we emerged on the other side.

Exhausted from the days adventure we moored up behind lock #1 of our 71 lock descent before our next canal.

Saturday 24 – 25 August

Went through 19 locks today – by the 3rd we had a pretty good routine going. Moored alongside the canal.

Decided we needed a rest day so Sunday just stayed on the boat and caught up on stuff.
