Since the train ride to Aveiro from Tomar was short, we had time to visit the Museo de Fosferos, the amazing matchbook museum in Tomar. This 80,000-book collection was the lifetime hobby of Azuiles da Mota.
We're here in Aveiro to experience gondolas and visit our friends Jim Madsen and North Johnson. Aveiro is called the Venice of Portugal. It was once known for the local fishing and seaweed industry and its salt flats but now is mostly known to tourists as the city of canals. The gondolas, with their distinctive prows, are the main attraction.
We found a Mexican bar in Portugal and had to try their margaritas. Our hostel, Hospedaria 5 Bicas, is located just outside the historic district and next door to Poco Loco Cantina.
