The beach at Ondres - looking north

Fisherman on the beach at Ondres

Tropical plants at our campsite at Ondres

Despite the beauty of the mountainous area, we were not prepared for the cold so did a hasty change in itinerary and headed south. Almost immediately the Spanish influence was obvious with less decorative buildings, lots of what we consider Spanish style houses made of adobe and red clay tile roofs, bullfighting arenas and tapas bars. Right now we are camped in Ondres which is about 20 minutes from Bayonne/Biarritz right on the Atlantic and last stop before Spain. Biarritz is a holiday destination for the rich and famous - but we are further up the beach with the poor and unknown. It is 25ÂșC here without a cloud in the sky, lots of tropical plants (bananas and palms) - very little culture but the most glorious stretch of white sandy beach with not a soul around. Well, except for the nude sunbathers.
