Guide at Matjiesfontein

Day 6. 19/8/2019 Monday. Cape Town to Matjiesfontein

We relaxed in total luxury at the Rovos Rail waiting room, offered Champagne, wine or orange juice and beautiful sandwiches and fresh fruit. Rohan Vos, owner of Rovos Rail, gave a welcoming talk. Due to running on South African time, we were 1+ hour late leaving. The train is less than 50% full, and not only have we been upgraded, we have a whole carriage to ourselves! We chatted with a Danish couple who are on their second trip. Departing Cape Town we went through the normal big city ‘slum’ area before passing through farming properties and saw Springboks, Flamingos, a Giraffe and wineries. We are climbing 750m out of the Hex River Valley with the mountains on our left, and went through 4 tunnels, the last 13.5km long. Passed a huge school for the Deaf in a small town.

Ostrich on the menu for dinner - I tasted it, could eat it again, but would choose not to. Because we were running behind schedule we only had a quick stop at Matjiesfontein Village where we were met by a Coloured flamboyant man who said his father was an Englishman who started the village, saw a chocolate cookie, liked it and took it and ‘here I am’. It was a whirlwind tour of the hotel finishing with a sing-song in the bar, a quick look at the museum then back on the train. The village tour could have been good, but no time.

We rocked and rolled through the night but had reasonable sleeps.
