Jeanne & John's Living The Dream travel blog

No post yesterday as besides driving from Jondaryan to St. George, nothing much to report, except we passed about about 1000 caravans & campers going in the opposite direction to us towards Dalby. After listening to a 2-way conversation we found out that they were all coming back from the camel races out west!

St George is quite a pretty little town on the the Balonne River, which is quite wide, but apparently quite low due to the drought. We started the day with a free bird watching walk with one of the locals, which ended up being 2 1/2 hours instead of 1 hour and saw a few species we have not seen before which was great. Hopefully got some good shots, although not checked yet!

We then decided to drive to Thallon to see the painted silos. Unfortunately the bright mid-day sun was not very conducive for photography. We stopped for our picnic lunch in the Big Hairy Wombat park in Thallon, and then stopped by the Nindigully pub, which has fantastic free camping on the river for future reference. We had to rush back as we were booked on a sunset cruise on the Balonne River for 2 hours, which was really enjoyable, but once that sun drops behind the horizon, the cold sets in quickly. We had a wonderful 24 degrees today with an estimated drop to 1 degree tonight!! We are really grateful that we have heating in the caravan.

The drought continues to hit home, with one wondering how these farmers survive in these conditions - very sad. The cars and trucks are also doing a great job (or not) of controlling the roo numbers - carcass upon carcass all along the roads - unbelievable the numbers.

A little tired tonight after a big day, but will see a lot of the local crafts and attractions tomorrow as well as visiting the local wine farm where we have an 'order' to fill for our neighbour back home!

Off to bed now and good night :)
