We arrived in Coimbra by bus. We checked into our hotel and started exploring the 4th largest city in the country. A couple of blocks away we were surprised to find a gallery with the George Steinmetz photography show called "Super Size: The Dizzying Grandeur of 21st Century Agriculture." Then we started seeing streets decorated for the weekend of the sardine festival. We stopped at a small square with an outdoor cafe. All of a sudden a man walks up followed by his pet duck.

As we walked around the city, the university complex (one of the oldest in Europe, completed in 1728) dominated the view. As we climbed up narrow streets, stairways, and alleys closer to the campus, we walked right into a medieval festival.
