Monday 5/13

You may have heard about the two planes that crashed on Monday. One was an Otter from Taquan. That is what we flew on with them a little over a week ago! Maybe the same plane?? At least 9 of the 10 passengers survived, condition of the 10th is unknown. We are hoping that the pilot is OK. Unfortunately the pilot and 4 passengers in the other plane, a Beaver, were killed. Our thoughts are with Taquan Air in Ketchikan, the cruise ship passengers that perished or were injured and their families.

Up at 5:00 AM Saturday to hook up, dump at the harbor and get in line for the ferry. The 3 hour ferry ride was very interesting as we went through the Wrangell Narrows. Cruise ships don’t go to Petersburg, mainly because of the Narrows. We saw a sow and 3 cubs (black) on the shore. Arrival at Frog’s RV Park was friendly and efficient. Full hookups and nice spot. We have their only true oceanside site. We have a resident bald eagle sitting on an old pole/piling 100 yds from our dining room window. Looked around town, had lunch at the Papa Bear’s pizza joint (probably only pizza in town – very good but very pricey) and took a quick trip out to Sandy Beach.

HAPPY BELATED MOTHERS’ DAY TO ALL YOU MOTHERS OUT THERE!

Sunday and Monday were all about touring Petersburg – mostly the back roads. Petersburg is a great little town, nicknamed “Little Norway” due to the large number of Scandinavian residents. The island is nearly ringed by snow-covered mountains. We saw a few dozen Sitka deer, eagles everywhere, a black bear, geese, ducks, a swan and 4 porcupines – 3 within a ¼ mile! Alas, no brown bears. We did two hikes, the longest about 3-1/2 miles around two lakes out in the puckerbrush. Upon returning on Monday, the CG owner gave us 4 crabs he had caught that day. They were delicious. We also bought some shrimp right off the boat in the harbor.

Tuesday – walking downtown, stores, shops, Sons of Norway Hall, the local museum, etc. Excellent lunch at the Salty Pantry. Unfortunately we are going to miss the big Norwegian celebration this coming weekend. Always around May 17 – try to hit it if you are coming here.
