March 28 - Barcelona

Our first full day in Barcelona , our plan was to stock the kitchen, find the TI in Placa de Catalunya and do the HOHO (hop-on, hop-off) bus to acquaint ourselves with the city. We got to the local market too early (they open at 9) so we wandered around the neighborhood. Returning to the market just as they were attempting to open - the automatic doors were not cooperating and would only open a couple of inches. After several attempts, finally the women were successful. With bags of supplies we were ready to settle in and start our exploring. Walking along some beautiful streets, we finally arrived at Placa de Catalunya to purchase our tickets for the two routes of the HOHO bus and a 4 day metro pass. The best way to see the sites from the bus are from the top deck which is open! After about the fifth stop on the Orange route, we were both cold even though the sun was out and we had jackets on - it was the wind! But we persevered through to the last stop (#19). Highlights of the route and places to return to were: Arc de Triomf, Olympic Park (1992 summer olympics), La Pedrera (a famous Gaudí designed house). Before taking the green route we needed to warm up and have lunch. Each of the routes are two plus hours, thus most of the Day was spent riding the bus! Highlights of the Green route were: the Catedral, the port area, and of course Sagrada Família (Gaudi’s still uncompleted Church with scaffolding and huge cranes still very visible). Unfortunately, Judi Bailey’s purse was stolen on the Green route (off the bus). The rest of the late afternoon and evening were spent cancelling credit cars, notifying various people and drinking wine! Dinner in was wine, cheese and crackers. jc
