|Day 13. Monday 21st January
That was our fourth night here so it was time to move on to Las Vegas our next camp. Nice sunny start at 8am heading North East. Our trusty SatNav took us out past Palmdale heading into the Mojave desert area. Across vast plains of desert scrub with mountain ranges in the far distance. Once clear of the populated areas it was just long straight roads many miles long. No problem as they were mainly wide two laned roads so we were able to cruise along about fifty miles an hour & the big trucks could overtake us.
We stopped at a town called Barstow for a break & to stock up again at our old favourite, Walmart. It wasn’t till we got out we realised how strong the wind was blowing. It nearly wrenched the door out of Viv’s hand. After stocking up the food & ice cream at Walmart’s we filled up the RV again with petrol. Had a problem with a couple of places as their VISA machines kept asking for a Zip code for our card which we don’t have. Fortunately the third petrol (gas) station didn’t quibble.
We did another couple of hours along the long straight, featureless & boring road until we stopped at the one rest area that we saw along the 200 odd miles to Vegas. Nice loos there though & views of the mountains we were heading to in the distance. The Southbound road running beside us was literally packed for long stretches with two lanes of slow moving traffic which must have been awful. Couldn’t see any reason for the crawling other than sheer volume of traffic.
Anyway we made the outskirts of Vegas by about 3.30pm & skirted our way around the East side & up to our camp site. Another packed site but at least they were expecting us & had a full service pitch ready.
Time for tea & a cake before going out for a walk in the dark to a nearby casino for some exercise & a look. A huge place with thousand & thousands of slot machines & loads of different restaurants, even a Burger King & a Subway. Interesting but not tempting enough to waste our money helping them get rich so back to the camp site to settle down for the evening.
