When I finally crossed the state line from Florida into Alabama, I had the sense that the trip had finally begun. Impressions of Alabama - cotton, kudzu, and a few rolling hills. Fields of cotton waiting to be picked are so white, and could almost be mistaken for snow (I hope that's not an omen of things to come). Kudzo along the side of the road ensnarls everything in its path. I make my first planned stop in Eufaula, Alabama, a charming small town full of antebellum houses. I am reminded that it pays to ask the local Chamber of Commerce for restaurant suggestions. A restaurant with no sign in an undistinguished motel yields a wonderful luncheon of down-home southern specialties.
