Sept 13

We continued northward on I-25 to Colorado Springs where we first toured the US Olympic Training Center. This hour long walking tour included a introductory movie and visits to a number of gyms, training venues and facilities. This is one of two impressive, nongovernment funded facilities, which is available to any qualified athlete, summer of winter sports, who compete at Olympic level, including Para Olympic athletes.

Our next stop was the USAir Force Academy. This is a huge base with a relatively isolated education and training facility high in the foot hills overlooking the very scenic Colorado Springs valley and prairies beyond.

Sept 14

Today we continued our tour of the USAF Academy. The architecture here is modern aluminum and glass, boxy in appearance and is supposed to relate more to aircraft than to the granite grandeur of West Point or the elegant architecture of Annapolis. The Chapel is an amazing modern structure.

After a brief stop at the outlet mall at Castle Rock, Co, we ended our day in Golden, CO. at the home of Lela and Bruce Hayes, Mel’s sister and brother-in-law, a favorite stop on nearly every trip eastward or westward across our country.
