This morning we took Uber to Gare St. Lazar and boarded our train for Vernon-Giverny. Upon arrival, we opted to take “le petit train Givernon” to Monet’s home and gardens. It was, after all, 2 euros cheaper than the shuttle bus and why not save a bit? When we boarded, there were only single seats left, and I ended up in the last car facing backwards, just as I sat many times during family trips in our 1965 Pontiac Safari station wagon. This “vehicle” did not engender trust from me as I was held in only by a plastic chain as the driver raced other cars on the road and turned corners quickly, whipping the end car around with each turn. I was glad to arrive and we all enjoyed the 10 minute walk to the house. I went to Giverny in September 2006 and it was as beautiful now as then. We toured the house and then made our way to the water lilies. It was a cloudy day so they were mostly closed. But then the sun broke through and a few were in the beginning stages of opening as we finished our visit.

We headed to a local restaurant that advertised itself as a “creperie and saladarie” and had a leisurely lunch around 1:00 pm. Then we headed back to our toy train for the return trip to the train station. I made sure I sat close to the front this time. All three of us did.

Some of you may not know that the Galeries Lafayette department store on Boulevard Hausmann in Paris has a large viewing deck on the top of the building. My sister in law and I discovered this when we were in Paris in December 2015. However, at this time of year there is a pop up bar/cafe on the deck so we shared a cold beverage and enjoyed watching the sun set over Paris along with lots of other people. It’s a really cool place to go if you have the time and don’t want to pay to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomph.

We secured another Uber ride and went back to near our apartment for a late dinner at a cafe just about half a block up the hill. Tomorrow morning we will meet my friend, Betty (Go Bruins!) who is married to Pierre and lives in the Dordogne. She came up by train today and we will tour museums and other things in Paris tomorrow and Friday before we head back to her house with her for a three day visit.
