Okay, now we’re talkin’. Took less than 15 minutes to go the 8 miles from the hotel to the Old Town San Diego Historic Park which is in the southeast quadrant of where I-5 and I-8 cross each other. Not even a slow down and it was around 8:30 AM. I was headed to the Old Town Trolley Tours which left from in front of the park. There was a large parking lot right across the street…and get this, it was free! That’s right, nada. 0. Gratis. I couldn’t believe it so I had to ask at the ticket booth to verify if it was true.

This tour is the same one Caitlyn and I took in 2009 when we were out here. The tour has 10 stops. I jumped off at Balboa Park stop 9. There are numerous museums and other sites in the park as well as the San Diego Zoo. Since I had been to the zoo a couple of times before, I decided to hit the Museum of Man. The California Tower is in this museum so the first thing I did was take the tour of it. It is guided and we stopped on each floor where the guide told us something about the tower…it’s construction, the chimes, etc. The last stop was on an observation deck perhaps 4 stories up where we spent about 15 minutes. After the tour I tracked down some lunch then headed back to the museum. They had a special exhibit on cannibalism I went through next. I probably shouldn’t have done this one right after lunch. Next, back over in the main museum I went through an exhibit called PostSecret. Back in 2004, a guy handed out post cards and told people to write down one of their secrets and anonymously mail it to him. He has received over a million postcards since then and there were a whole bunch of them on display in this exhibit. They ran the gamut from humorous to very serious. Finally, went through an exhibit that discussed human’s relationships to animals from why we eat certain kinds and make pets of others. Also spent some time walking around the park both before and after the visit to the Museum of Man. Hopped back on the 3:40 trolley to finish the tour which at this point only included a run through Little Italy.

Back at Old Town Park walked around for a bit then had dinner at a Mexican place. Left around 6:15, the traffic was even lighter than in the morning so I was back at the hotel by 6:30.
