Sat, 15 Sep: Happy Birthday to Shel & Stacy...

A road day! Up early-ish and perform our morning routine plus getting ready for the road. Once our checklists were complete Sandi carefully backed out of our site. The trees in this park are so numerous that driving forward would not have worked very well. Backing out was the prudent option.

Once clear we connected the car, performed our brake & lite checks, and were ready to go. Sandi pulled out of the RV park at 0845 and headed east on the frontage road to the on ramp and in short order we joined I 40 westward.

An hour (and 49 miles) later we pulled into the Sky City Travel Center located in Pueblo of Acoma. This is a fuel station operated by the Sky City Casino. Diesel was selling for $2.999/gallon, a good 25-30¢ less than anyplace around. We added sixty gallons to our tank, which gives us plenty of fuel to get to Phoenix.

I 40 is pretty remarkable in western New Mexico. We passed thru the lava fields near El Malpais and spectacular red rock bluffs. We swapped drivers at the Continental Divide and Bob continued thru Gallup and into Arizona (where we gained an hour as we moved into Mountain Standard Time).

Our plans were to break for lunch at the Arizona border rest stop. Alas, all of the truck spaces were taken so we continued west another sixty-some miles to Sun Valley. We pulled into Sun Valley RV at 1210 (MST) and were quickly assigned a full service (50a) pull thru site. Once set up we enjoyed a relaxing lunch.

Today's drive was 216 miles with a fuel economy just north of nine miles per gallon.
