Puerto Morelos is located halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. This fishing village has resisted resort development and has zoning in place to restrict building height. It is a pleasant small town with just the right number of shops, restaurants, bars, and sightseeing offerings.
We arrived before noon and stopped for Eggs Benedict. After we walked around the plaza we signed up at Marina Pelicanos for a glass-bottom boat tour which included snorkeling on the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world. Beginning at its northernmost point at Isla Contoy near Cancun, it stretches southeast 600 miles to Honduras. At Puerto Morelos the reef is very close to shore and designated a national park. We swam in water 2 meters deep and saw manta rays, eels, live conchs and colorful fish. Our captain Anastacio and our underwater guide Victor gave us a private tour for $50/3 hours.
We had lunch at La Platita on the beach and took the air-conditioned van back to Playa del Carmen.
