Billys moonshine

Touring in Tuscumbia, Florence, Muscle Shoals area of north west Alabama while the motor home is being worked on.

We visited the “Alabama Music Hall of Fame” and learned about many, many music artists who we didn’t know had connections with Alabama.

Muscle Shoals is the location of at least three major music recording studios, the most famous of which is “Fame”. Many of the top recording artists have recorded music here over the years.

Tuscumbia was also the birthplace and home of Hellen Keller.

Our most fun tour was just east of Muscle Shoals at the Dawson Distillery. This is a small building at the end of a dirt track road in the woods where we met Mr. Billy Dawson making real, authentic moonshine.

Billy is the 3rd generation descendent of the “Dawson Gang” who were moonshiners and bank robbers. The distillery land had been the farm home of the Dawson family and had been their hideout. After a stint in prison Billy had purchased the property back from the government and has been making “Shine” here for a number of years following in his families’ footsteps. He has improved the facilities and recently became a licensed distiller of fine whiskey. While we were there we watched Billy making 40 gallons of fine, very smooth and delicious Rye Whiskey. Many samples were provided and enjoyed before we made our purchases.
