Woke up to rain this morning which is welcomed by those in Colorado.
Cleared up after breakfast when we went into Craig. During our last visit we did not see the wood carvings in the city park. In 1999 Craig looked for a way to preserve cottonwood trees deteriorating in the park. They left the tree stumps for local artists to decorate with elaborate carvings using a chainsaw. There are about 50 around the park. Lots of fun. We found the kitchen store we loved last time. There is new ownership but the same very interesting kitchen tools. We bought a portable spiralizer for the rig. We love the one our Sonoma friends the Hoffmans gave us.
We stopped in Steamboat Springs for the Saturday farmer’s market. Last month we spent a week there with Josh and Melissa and found a great jewelry vendor at the market that I wanted to revisit. We also returned to one of the most amazing libraries we have found in our travels across the US. (When we need good WiFi we go to the library!) For the size of the town it is HUGE and with beautiful architecture. Lots of sitting areas, coffee shop, children’s play room, individual study rooms etc. The locals joke that people come to Steamboat to ski but fall in love with the library!
There are huge fires in the mountains and along the way on CO 40 we saw a fire fighter staging area that must have 800 tents, heavy equipment etc. Apparently the morning rain cleared out much of the smoke. We continued on to Kremmling where we stopped to sit on a park bench and eat our yummy quiches that we bought at the farmer’s market. We welcomed the 65 degree temps!
We arrived at Josh and Melissa’s house about 4:00. Tonight we are going to Barrolo which was just added to the Wine Spectator list of Grand Awards this year. (There are only 91 in the world and it is only a 10 minute walk from the house.). Bob spent 2 hours before we left Sonoma reviewing the massive list and has selected a wine. Both Josh and Melissa have birthdays in August so we will celebrate. Will let you know about the dinner tomorrow. Stay tuned!!
