|From Batumi we followed the coast up to the port town of Poti and wished we hadn't. It was the most depressing town we had seen and clearly showed on the faces of people that seemed to be just wandering around. Houses and other buildings were in decay.
We could not wait to drive on.
While leaving we came the closest yet to having a serious accident when a driver simply crossed our lane from a side street to make a turn. His face lacked any form of concern as he passed around us but we were shaken for a time. His expression was vacant, there was no one home.
