We shared a quick breakfast and left the resort before 8:00 to arrive at the Echo Canyon White Water Rafting company by 8:45 AM.
The kids were excited and everyone anticipated a good time white water rafting on the Arkansas River. We took care of the minor details, were fitted with a helmet and a PFD (Personal Flotation Device), locked our valuables in the car and turned in the key before boarding the bus.
The old retired school bus towed a trailer behind with eight rafts loaded, part on the trailer and several loaded and tied down on top of the bus.
One of the guides gave us a safety briefing mixed with some humor as the bus made its way through the mountains to the launch point on the river.
I remember that he informed us that the guides would not be the ones to help us back aboard the raft if we fell out. That job he said would be up to the other passengers on board. That meant for me that i would depend on my wife, my daughter, and my two grandkids, ages 8 and 10. In other words my goose would be cooked if I fell into the river.
Down the river we went, faster and faster as we navigated the rapids which varied from Stage II to Stage III on some sort of scale which measures that sort of stuff.
It was fun and all was going well as we bounced and splashed through several rapids. Suddenly the raft spun sideways and banged into a rock just below where I was sitting on the edge. SPLASH!
That sound was me hitting the river.
Marilyn grabbed my glasses while I desparately kept my grip on a metal frame in the raft. Jennifer and Marilyn managed to get me high enough that I could help myself back on board. Jennifer said that my first words after this incident was "We aren't going to tell anyone about this are we?"
The remainder of the trip was great and the rapids were fun. All in all it was a very nice trip, even if I did nearly die! LOL
It was late when we arrived at Pizza Madness in Canon City. A really good pizza for each of us did the trick and we continued home feeling tired but refreshed.
We have another adventure planned for Friday so stay tuned. Life is Good!
