Bluenose Sailing Ship

96 miles to Lunenburg NS, located on the Nova Scotia South Shore about 75 miles south west of Halifax, on the Atlantic Ocean. Lunenburg is the home of the “Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic”, part of the “Nova Scotia Museums”. This was our major stop of the area. The Museum commemorates and displays many, many artifacts of the fishing heritage of the US and Canadian fishing industry. Here we learned how fishermen earned their livelihood on the harsh North Atlantic vessels of all fishing industries from the early 1800’s to present day. Items are on display inside the museum and on several fish boats alongside the adjacent piers.

The most important vessel is the Bluenose II. The original Bluenose was a fishing and sailing legend in the 1940’s as a active fishing vessel as well as a racer. She was lost on a reef off Haiti in January 1946.
