Eagles Nest

We returned to the Berchtsgaten area to drive the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse. It was in this area the the opening scenes of Maria running over the hills in the Sound of Music was filmed. Although a short drive the road had some great views over the Sach River valley and the mountains surrounding Berchtsgaten. We even could also see the Eagle’s Nest in the distance.

The drive finished in Obersalzberg and we debated whether we would take the bus up to Hitler’s Eagle Nest which is now a tea house, but when we saw the crowds we decided against it. Instead we visited the Documentation Obersalzberg an exhibition on the rise, fall and crimes of the Nazi movement, its mythology and its association with Obersalzberg. The area of Obersalzberg was taken over to become the private fiefdom for Nazi bigwigs, many who had their holiday homes here. British bombers destroyed much of the complex in 1945 and the rest was demolished after the war.
