lower Balkans & Greece travel blog

sunflowers brightened our drive

car wash businesses are everywhere in Albania

the road to the airport ..... you must be kidding

check-in time at Tirana International

economy 'yes' ..... but no way to this

Unlike yesterday's drive to Berat the drive to Tirana was absolutely boring by comparison and therefore quite relaxing.

The landscape was not all that interesting but passing through large fields of sunflowers certainly provided plenty of colour.

We deliberately spent the final night of our 'lower Balkans & Greece' travels in a hotel near the airport rather than in the city to keep things simple for our flight connection the next morning.

Great plan, shame it did not quite work out.

Hotel breakfast and checkout …. tasty and easy.

GPS directions for the 'short' drive to the airport …. entered.

On the road …. almost but not quite. As if to give us a special farewell and reminder of Albanian roads we were directed onto another goat track. A long goat track following the airport's perimeter. Pot holes, many filled with water, mud and rocks. We were getting more and more excited.

Finally we arrived into the 'rear end' of the airport then of course we entered the wrong gate to the car return area. Happy days.

Car return …. smooth as silk.

Turkey was next where we plan to self drive for 4 weeks exploring the Black Sea coast and who knows where else.

We intend to reconsider our GPS service.

It will be fun.
